Steering wheel removal

Postby 15delux » Sun Dec 15, 2013 9:44 pm

Hi all, I'm presuming it's the usual clips holding the air bag in place then just the but in the middle but how long do I need to leave the battery off to discharge the system and secondly if I don't have the radio code how do I get that back ?

Disconnect battery negative cable first & allow minimum of 10 min for system to power down before removing airbag. :!:

Yes usual clips hoolding airbag in place.
Insert small screwdriver into small hole on back of steering wheel ( 1 hole on each side of wheel) & pull away from centre to release air bag at the top.

Once realeased lift airbag & pull away, Disconnect wiring for airbag & horn. Remove bolt, steering wheel should lift away no problem

Unfortunately yes you will require key code for head unit. (I can supply that - just require serial number from head unit to do so)

Cheers, I will pull the head unit out tomorrow, 1 more thing you replied on my other posts about the bad running. It now runs lovely but.... White smoke for the first 5 mins of a run then none after? Any ideas?? My nice new injectors faulty?

A number a things can cause white smoke, main faults are

EGR cooler internally corroded allowing coolant to entre exhaust (huge amount of steam exists exhaust)
EGR valve sticking open, also causes lack of power, uneven idle (as if misfiring) - easy fix just blank it off with a blanking plate.
If engine runs hot & looses coolant with no apparent leaks - Head gasket is prime suspect.
Check airfilter element, replace if necessary.

If injectors are faulty normally DTC gets logged to reflect that & a back leak test done to confirm it.

I will try another leak back test but the smoke disappears after 5 min max on a run, no loss of power either??

I have been trying to get my steering wheel off and the Haynes manual said to press the screwdriver towards the centre. I fought with it for half an hour, then came in and read this. Went back out, tried it your way (pull away from centre) and it came off in 1 minute.

What are Haynes like? Bloody anal columns they are.

Wow is it really that easy? I was going to pay someone to do it might as well give it bash once I've left it disconnected long to power down, I will also need a code for the radio if someone could supply that? Also what torque should the nut be done back up at? I've no manual also what size socket is required?? Time to buy a new steering wheel lol.....
