Noisy New Tyres

Postby axxeman » Sun Jul 20, 2014 11:42 pm

Hello guys, had a pair of Hankook fitted to the front end on Friday and the road noise is horrendous. Absolutely deafening. They have abated a little after 250 miles but are still roaring at all speeds - even as low as 5 mph!

What can I do about it? They were fitted by a mobile company; Event Tyres. Have I just been unlucky or are these Korean tyres noisy rubbish?

Thanks...

... and what should I have put on that doesn't cost stupid money?

Change them to the rear and see if that makes any difference. Tyre roads noise is usually due to tread pattern design.

Far from it.

Hankook Optimo K406 195/65R15 91H (or reinforced 95T) are OE, and were fitted to countless THOUSANDS of Connect T200 and T220/T230 vans.

I've just changed mine last week for another 4 Hankook because I rate them. The OPTIMO pattern has been superceded by newer tread patterns which are more high tech. Mine are even better than the old pattern.

Exactly what Hankook model & size have you had fitted?

This is what was on the online booking form;

2 x 195/65R15 95T HANKOOK K425 KINERGY XL

They are returning Friday to investigate and (hopefully) correct the problem.

They're asymmetric but direction is either way as long as they ARE marked "outside" on one wall and they are both correctly fitted according to that, (as far as I can ascertain)

I am suspecting the nearside is making most of the din but that could be an aural illusion... we'll see tomorrow for sure.

Well, I am officially a muppet. Turns out that the nsf wheel bearing is making the noise. Looks like someone had tightened it up previously (new drive nut), and jacking the van up for the tyres had somehow disturbed it...

Either way, tyres not to blame.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

Thanks for clearing this up.

These K425 KINERGY Eco XL are what I've had fitted, and I picked them because they were BBB rated on the new Euro scale (Rolling Resistance, Wet Grip, and Noise). TBH I had to order them direct from the Hankook distributor at Northampton because the local dealers hadn't heard of 'em & wanted to fob me off with Firestone Multhawk (£5 a tyre cheaper maybe, but labelled EEC)

The new breed of tyres have got a much higher % of silica to meet the Euro label standard. I'm really chuffed with them as they're definitely quieter, and the van seems to be a bit quicker on them. There's been no rain so haven't tried them out in the wet. I expect to crack the 50mpg barrier with these on the next long run
