Air con problem Connect 2004 Tdci

Postby mvirdee » Sat Aug 09, 2014 3:14 pm

Hi Guys

I have a problem.

When I turn on the AC switch after about 10 secs I hear a ticking noise.... the clutch spins for 2 secs and then stops for a few.. it keeps doing this.
I topped/topping up the gas using Halford EZ topup with the hose that the psi guage. As the clutch kicks in the pressure drops and the rises when the clutch stops spinning.
There is no cold air coming from the vents at all.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advanced.

How low does the pressure drop to when the clutch kicks in?

Was the system empty before you topped it up? If so you can't just add gas to an empty system, you need to evacuate with a vacuum pump first and then weigh the refrigerant in.

Unplug the pump and try running it off the battery

Yes it was empty.
The pressure is just before the green on the gauge which is about 25 psi / 1.7 bar.
When the clutch is off the pressure rises to 45psi / 3.1 bar.

Is there anything in here which advises how to do this?

Also which relay is connected to the pump?

Thanks

You need to vacuum the system out, you might have air in there and if that is the case you will damage the compressor. It's probably stopping now on the low pressure switch, if you put a bit more gas in it won't stop and will keep running, but you really should do it properly.

If it was empty, then you probably have a decent size leak somewhere too, so it's pointless putting gas in as it's just going to leak out again.

Pressure test with nitrogen to find the leak, then vacuum, then recharge the gas by weight.

If you've not got the gear to do this, then get someone to do it for you, you're going to damage the system if you keep going to way you are.

From passenger side in the fuse box row furthest from the bulkhead 3rd fuse across

Relay should be the black one between the too grey ones just behind the small fuses

Could need a new pump if there's no leeks on the system if you get a second hand one make sure you it has enough oil in it
