P0490 EGR Limp home Mode

Postby flstf » Sat Aug 30, 2014 6:16 pm

Hi
Re: Ford connect t230 90ps 2008 79,000 miles

A few weeks ago the engine managment light came. The fault code was related to the Egr valve. The manifold was removed and the Egr valve and manifold were badly coked up.
It was cleaned in a ultrasonic hot tank and refitted. The van has run great for a few weeks and definatley ran a lot better than before. Out the other day and it suddenly went into limp
home mode, and the light on the dash lit up. I got it back home turned it off and restarted it the light went out. Got 100 yards down the road and it went back into limp home mode. I know fitting a blanking plate to this year of van shouldnt work but today i tried fitting a makshift blanking plate to the Egr and it now runs, although with a little hesitation at low revs sometimes. I did read that fitting one with a hole in it could help.
I cant understand how this code can come up after having the valve cleaned and checked. Its also the first time its ever gone into limp home mode

Any advise is appreciated

I have same problem sometimes I will get in the van and it runs fine the eml will go out of its own accord then the next time i start it up it will come back on and be sluggish at low revs I was told by a remap guy that he could write it out of the ecu and I would have no problem don't know if this is true if someone can shed some light on this aswell

Hi

After the egr valve and manifold were cleaned it was a differant van. I would advise you to do it.
I think my problem must lie elswheree as the vale is spotless.

All connects from 2006-2013 (Euro 4 & 5) Have electronic EGR valves.
Blanking EGR valves off on Euro 4 & 5 engines does NOT cure a faulty EGR valve :!:

Inlet manifold/EGR valve cleaned.... Possibly faulty EGR actuator. :?:

1st get DTC's read (Error codes) - if not sure, what they stand for. Then post them here on the forum.

If DTC is stored for EGR

Check for a sticking/seized EGR valve - Tip watch vid here  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwsyFzg ... LCAqALvHNg
IF valve is nice & free - than as mentioned above. Possible faulty EGR actuator

Thanks for the reply.

The egr valve moves freely and the motor is free. I will look at the actuator as you suggest.
What i dont understand is fitting the makeshift blanking plate enables me to drive the van.

EGR actuator may not be closing EGR valve. Essentially starving it of clean air
Normally associated with DTC P0490 Exhaust Gas Recirculation "A" Control Circuit High

By blanking it off, will allow you to drive. BUT still flag a relevant DTC for fault.

I will check again to see if its stored the code again, i cleared it after fitting the plate.
It has,nt put the light on yet. Can it throw up fault codes without putting the light on?

Thanks again

Anyone know if writing it out of the ecu with a map works?

I might contact van tuner and ask him if he can do it and eliminate the egr altogether

Hi

Just an update if anyones intersted.
I read an article elswhere saying that blanking the egr on the euro 4 models can work for certain vehicles. It said it can depend on what ecu is fitted.
So i replaced the makeshift blanking plate with a nice new stainless laser cut one from bertye1958 on the well known auction site.
I got the one they recommended for the euro 4 engine, it has a 10 mm hole in the middle. Fit it last week and so far its been
spot on. Its never driven as good and it definatley accelerates much quicker. Part throttle respnse is much improved.
So for all those who say it wont work blanking off the egr on the euro 4 models it does, or at least its has for me. Give it a go, i only paid £4 for the plate with next day delivery
If things change ill post an update. :D

It will work fine until that hole closes up with soot and hen you'll most likely suffer the same problem.
