Postby Adam_84 » Sun Sep 07, 2014 12:07 pm

So this is the state of my cambelt heard something rubbing a few days ago on the cambelt cover, bloody lucky I checked before it snapped. I had the alternator changed along with new timing belt am I right in thinking timing belt is same as cambelt?

Hard to say but looks ok just load of rubber shavings. In the post you mentioned that does seem possible but where would I stand with HiQ who changed the belt for me? Would assume it's in the work instruction from Ford to check for such a thing

Couldn't get the cover out managed to remove all the bolts but can't remove it, the recess for the rear screw seems to be wedging it in and with the engine mount tight up against it I couldn't get it off

Yes it is and yes they should have done, so it might not be that BUT it should not look like that after 11.000 miles

Will give HiQ a call tomorrow and see what they say, after finding it I'm reluctant to drive it. Any advice on how to approach this with them as the way I see it it's nothing that I've done to cause the the belt to wear so much obviously there probably going to think I've done something to cause the problem

Call me cynical but I don't think they actually changed it and it's your original belt  and the tensioner or idler pulley is going

Im sure the belt they took off didnt look like that, looks like it been incorrectly fitted:

belt to tight,
tensioner not seated correct,
rubbing on cover,

I see they have also replaced the pump oil seal, if its the front main oil seal they would have had to take off the pump pulley, that could also not be seated correctly

It did go back to them 5 months afterwards for a squeak coming from a belt/pulley so they changed the alternator belt.
Will pop in tomorrow and see what they say. Cheers for your help mate much appreciated.

Had mine even in worse condition after 40,000 km. Wouldn't have known it if the fuel pump didn't fail and I took it to repair.

Update

Van picked up to today on flat bed by Garage to take back and have a look at what failed, bloke said to my missus he had to drive it out of parking space (I'd been told not to drive it) so she said on your head be it if it snaps then it's your fault. Fortunately it didn't and it should be being investigated tomorrow hopefully.
The driver also said that normally the wear is caused by a worn bearing so already sounds like their passing the buck probably to me but will wait and see.

Now I don't want anyone ranting or going off on one saying they'd do this and do that to the garage but if they don't cover the cost of the repair and if they do try and say it's down to worn bearings or another worn part what are peoples opinions on what to do next?
Obviously I want to see the failed parts and look it over myself and inspect the engine cover to check if they had removed the required amount of plastic so the belt doesn't touch it with the new auto tensioner but is there anything else I should look at?
