Is the immobiliser light coming on, and going out after a few seconds when you switch on

The red one in the tachometer.

It should come on, and then go out and stay out, when you switch on the ignition

yeah that light goes out, the only ones that stay on are the battery, oil and break

OK, so that rules out the immobiliser, and you have changed the crank sensor; that the two most common faults eliminated

Once DTC's (Error codes) have been read

If the following DTC's are present.

P1664 Injection Pump Control Module Malfunction
P1564 Injection Pump Control Module Requesting Reduced Fueling

EDC mounted to top of fuel pump has failed.

i've just googled fuel pump EDC i'm hoping not to see those codes but the way my week is going i'm half expecting it

Always worth carefully checking the pump wiring before you panic; the wires do get abused where they run around to the pump

thank you all for your help so far, i hope i can get to the bottom of this when the fault code reader arrives as i can't be driving about in the works vw crafter for too much longer, its a little on the larger size to be running about town in

I have the diagnostic tool but it isn't doing what I expected,when I plug it and turn on the ignition it stays on this

And it will stay on that till I turn the ignition off for 10 seconds and then it will go on to this screen

Then if I turn the ignition back on and select read codes it goes on to this screen

And that's where it stays

Ah right, I've just turned the ignition off and it now says this

Does that say C0141, can only see half of it, C codes are chassis code and not engine code, as for

"cylinder 4 exhaust valve control circuit low"

I am sending that code reader back as it is obviously no help to me, today I've had someone round from the garage with his diagnostic machine which came up with lots of codes but he said that they could be old codes or codes created while looking for the problem etc but he did say that the codes were pointing in the direction of the fuel pump he did tell me to replace the fuel filter and fill it with conditioner and try that, if it's not that I'm gonna have to get it into a garage.
