Loss in power,

Postby Trekex8 » Thu Oct 16, 2014 3:01 pm

Hi Guys looking for some help.

My van is taking a funny turn,
Under light acceleration seems to be fine at first, then it feels as if it is holding back, then fine again.
Under harder acceleration does not seem to be a problem.
I have read that the accelerator pedal can be a bit temperamental.

any ideas ?????

Any flashing lights when it happens?

When was the last time it was seeviced (including the fuel filter)?

Hi gt

Don't get any warning lights,
Van is a ex police van, records say it had a service when decommission two month ago ?????
Due to get a service next month.
Thought I should check so the mechanic could look while it is garage.
Thanks for the info.

It could be a multiple of things really. Easiest fixes are fuel filter and checking if there are any leaks on the inlet hoses. Pedal is also a possibility as you've said.

I cant see it being fuel filter, van need more fuel under hard acceleration !

Dont want to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like your EGR valve is on the way out with no engine managment light on until you really rev the nuts off it then it will come on and there will be loads of black smoke comming out of your exhaust.. Take it to a garage and get it on a computer that can read all codes and has a diagnostic system... With the system they can in real time see what the problem is... Mine was read as egr valve fluttering at at low revs so when you go to pull away it hesitates then it goes fine ... Each time you pull away there is that hesitation that requires extra revs causing a bad return in fuel consuption.. If it is your egr then it will not pass an mot as mine was knacked by the tester when he revved the nuts off it doing the smoke test at 4300 rpm 6 times to see if it would pass I got it back with the engine management light on...

If the MOT tester revved it 6 times its because it was knackered to start with.

Hi Guys,

Can the EGR Valve be removed and cleaned ?...

Thinking about giving it a go myself, but not sure if it would be better just to replace it.

Exhaust manifold needs to come off (which includes turbo), then you can take the inlet manifold off. It's a big job really. I'd try a can of "Wynns EGR cleaner" I use it every service before I change all the filters etc.
