Today's Technical Question

Postby Colin.ah » Thu Nov 20, 2014 11:27 am

Technical question of the day, how straight forward is changing the timing belt on our TDDI engine? We are all confident about tackling any job on the van and reasonably competent mechanically, but it is a Ford and Ford do like their “special tools” and we don’t want to end up buying 200 tools we will never use again just to change one timing belt.
So should we do it ourselves or let the garage handle it?

Next technical question for today, on inspection, we noticed that the plastic timing cover is broken, there is big hole in it where it looks like a rock has gone through it, and we will replace it when the timing belt gets changed.
Our engine is the TDDI model, is there any other engines in the range that we could use the timing belt cover from? We are off to the salvage yard tomorrow and I don’t want to come away with the wrong thing.
Myself and three others run a charity to help long term unemployed teenagers and disabled adults in to work. We are restoring our Connect to carry kids and our tools from workplace to workplace.

Don't forget that the Mk1 & 2 Focus ( 1.8 ) shares the same engine as the Connect (not sure about the Mk3 :? )
There are a lot more of them in the scrap yards

Thank you both for that, it will save us a load of time in the salvage yard and I don't mind having a go at the timing belt if we only need £20 worth of tools.

On a lighter, brighter note, we insured old Bunty yesterday in preperation of taking her for her MOT, four of us to drive, Social, Domestic & Pleasure + Business use and £2000 worth of tools (not overnight) £107 fully comprehensive, sometimes old codgerism pays off :D

How did you manage that price for the insurance ? With four drivers, where in the UK are you, and who are the insurers.?

We used Compare the Market to get the prices and the free toy, Kwik Fit was the cheapest at £107 with a compulsory excess of £100, not sure who the actual insurer is yet. We all live in sunny Aberdeenshire, and the four of us have maximum no claims bonus. :D

I have just changed the cam belt on a tdci version and it was surprisingly easy. To use the kit properly you do need to remove the alternator and starter motor and to get at the belt you have to remove the header tank and offside engine mount.
