Fuel Pump Drive chain/belt

Postby dimmaz88 » Tue Feb 10, 2015 7:12 pm

Hi everyone, this is my first post as I've just bought a 09 Connect.

First question is do I have a chain or belt? I rang the ford tech line and he says a belt, but when I search for parts online it shows up with a chain. It was built 10-09-2008. (1.8 duratorq TDCi lynx)

Second question is, can this be replaced without removing the engine? The haynes manual says not, the ford tech guy says yes it can.

Third, does it come as a cassette as the guy who I bought it off says?

And finally, would I be able to do it myself. I'm average when it comes to mechanics, but my mate would be helping who has quite a bit of experience.

TIA

I look forward to getting to know this van! It drives like a dream compared to my old berlingo, I have power steering at last!

my 2011 van is booked in monday to have both belts done, they changed from a chain on the pump to a cassette wet belt in 07/08.
ford price is around 860-00 to 960-00 to have both belts done.

Wow, starting to wish I hadn't bought a connect lol.

I won't be taking it to ford, so I guess it wouldn't be as much.

Cheers

Do you know if that's removing the engine or not?

I can't see it taking that long of the engine can stay in.

No need to remove engine when replacing lower timing chain / lower timing belt. Both are rated up to 150,000 miles before replacements are required

It's fairly straight forward to do but can be fiddly as there's not much room.

Cheers, the service book has been stamped every 15,000 but I don't know if the belts have been done. As they've sold it at 155k I doubt it.

I'll try ringing the garage that's done the work, maybe they'll have a record.

My mate's up for doing it too, we have the Haynes manual, how hard can it be :?

Do you know which other cars have the same engine? I'm trying to find a video on youtube

I'm just about to buy a 2011 van and it has done 60,000 do i need to have this done as i had heard was ok to 100,000 or 10 years? hope it's easier than the last piss take as on my 06 mwb transit i had to make a video of the procedure to prove to Ford that they were supplying an inadequate tensioner.
If i have to do it i will make another video on the connect.

Top cambelt with tensioner I have done (every 63,000 miles)

Lower timing belt (belt in oil type) doesn't need replacing until 150,000 miles.

Focus mk3 1.8 TDCi & Mondeo mk4 1.8 TDCI both have same engines with belt in oil for lower timing belt.

Here's a youtube vid of one on a Focus mk3  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gamn_MxNDw

Cheers guys, definitely de-mystified the setup.

Is this wet-belt a common thing?

Just thought I'd let you know we managed to fit the 3 new belts. Took us from 9am till midnight lol. It was an experience and I enjoyed it all.

We snapped a oil pump bolt, luckily it left enough to get the vice grips on it. Vey Lucky!

I doubt I'll ever have to do it again that's for sure.

Cheers for the help guys.
