My transit connect lost power on way home tonight and the warning light came on it seemed to clear after a bit does anyone know the possible cause

Welcome to the forum.
It's a needle in a haystack until you get the codes read via the OBD2 port. Once you post those it narrows down the issue.most common is EGR related or fuel presure related problems, but it's just clutching at straws until we have the codes.

Any suggestions for Android or Windows software? I have an ELM327 Bluetooth scanner and the apps I have tried do not recognize the TC protocol.
