1k revs to 2k revs rattle

Postby Martyn84 » Mon Apr 27, 2015 8:38 pm

When driving in 1k-2k rev range the van makes a rattle noise. Like their is a hole in the exhaust. After that rev range. All is good. Ive read alot and found the term "gearbox thrash". When i put my clutch in. The noise goes Really annoying Does this sound like "gearbox thrash". If so whats next

Thanks. Van is a 2003 1.8 tddi

A new clutch will sort that, I had the same, when I changed the engine I put a new clutch in and the noise was gone, the old clutch wasnt that worn BUT the center splines on the clutch disc where the gearbox primary shaft goes in was rattling about

Mine was real bad, when driving up narrow streets I had people turning round with a WTF's that noise look on their face, if you can put up with it leave it till its clutch change time

What if its not the clutch and is the gearbox? I get it changed and it still does the noise then its out with them both again and gearbox time. What would you do fit a gearbox aswel as a clutch. Or are you adamant its the clutch? Thanks for your reply mate

I had a gearbox and clutch changed at the same time (synchro on fourth was shot), my friction plate springs were really loose which is what was causing the rattling sound on my van at about 1.5k-2k rpm.

Just a quick one. Will a gearbox from a 2003 FORD FOCUS ESTATE 1.8 TDCI DIESEL 115PS 1998 - 2004 fit my transit connect 1.8 tddi 2003 ? Thanks

Yes it will fit but different final drive ratio, the Focus box has 3.41, the Connect box has 4.06

I wouldn't put that box in a 75ps tddi. Hasn't got the guts.

Sorry to sound thick. But is that good or bad. And will i need anything else for it to fit. Or is it a straight swop. Thanks for your reply mate

You'd have to swap the gear selector on the top of the box

The Focus g\box has higher \ longer gears, where before you could do say 60mph in 5th, you'd have to go down to 4th as the Connect engine hasnt got the power to pull the van along in higher gears at the lower revs

If you are going to carry any sort of weight then the engine won't have enough power to be able to move the van. Well it will but it would be putting it under a lot of load. Personally I'd just swap it for a box from another van.

But if you can is a personal can, not used for lugging about loads of tools or materials then shouldn't be too bad if imagine.

Personally I'd stick with what it has, they are the same on the 75ps tddi and the 90ps tdci as far as I'm aware. If you had a 90ps engine then it would be more feasible. I'm not saying it's not possible but for all the hassle of changing it you could lose driveability if it's used for work purposes. It's all down to what you need the van for really.
