Fuel economy

Postby pushrod » Mon Jan 18, 2016 11:33 am

Can some kind soul please let me know what mpg I should be getting from my 04 LWB (75)?
First fill up I got 38mpg - pretty reasonable, I thought.
This weeks fill gave 32mpg. I know it's got a lot colder, but does it really make THAT much difference?
Will change oil and all the filters soon, so that should help a bit.

I think that is half your answer. On another thread I wrote
'I did a 400 mile round trip to Somerset, no motorways, minimal dual carriageways mostly single carriageway roads. Stuck to all vehicle limits i.e 50 mph and 60 mph and got 49 mpg.
If you cruise on motorways, gentle on the throttle you should get over 50mpg easily.
IMO the brick like aerodynamics at higher speeds kills the MPG, and obviously using heavy acceleration'

You will need to monitor quite accurately over a number of refills and a number of weeks to get a realistic idea of your consumption. I do not get 49mpg just driving around with lots of stop/start driving.

I achieved 32-38 mpg from my 2008 Connect T200 110 tdci. No matter how carefully l drove, it could not get over 40mpg. I bought the van new and did 80,000 miles in it.

And yes in Winter it dropped to about 32mpg. That was in town driving, but not heavy on the right foot.

On my 2007 90hp LX I get between 43 and 48 mpg every week without fail.
Only really drive to work and back in it (12 miles each way) Single carriageways and back lanes.
Tyre pressure checked weekly. Only use Shell diesel (no supermarket stuff etc)
Never goes bellow 3/4s of a tank either (mainly in case there's a shortage or something)

I keep track of my fill ups and yesterday I actually calculated my average since I bought the van almost 2 years ago.
The eberspächer really makes a huge difference in the numbers during winter because it runs automatically when the coolant temp is below a certain temperature, 50-60C I think.
I live in the countryside so have pretty nice driving pattern for getting good fuel economy. Small rural roads, 10 miles to nearest town.
So here's my numbers
winter 35-39mpg
summer 44-46mpg

Average over 24706km (15441miles) 41mpg

My 2006 TDCi 75 (142k) at present in this weather is getting approx 44mpg - that's doing a 64 mile round trip from So'ton to Basingstoke.

When purchased (no history whatsoever) it was doing around 40mpg, changed the filters & oil it was upto 47 in the summer months.
On a 1300 mile round trip to Loch Ness back in Sept it averaged over 48.

Although, as a previous post says - weight & a heavy foot along the M/Way & the MPG does drop, A LOT !!

Thanks for the answers, seems mpg varies a bit. I'm not looking for a miracle; 40ish mpg would be fine.
My driving is about 50% motorways, 30% A-roads and 20% lanes - little or no town driving - so it looks as though I may have to slow down a bit...
It's a new van (to me) so I'll change oil and filters asap. Oh, and take the roof-rack off!

Ndriver, thanks for the reminder about tyre pressures...

Roof rack makes a difference. Also try and keep the revs under 3k, it's no fun but saves juice.

Agree, I find 2500 rpm is enough to make adequate progress, and the engine does not bog down in the next gear.

I have a 2008 T200 LX 110. I fill up 40 litres every time. I re-fuel within a few miles of the orange fuel light coming on. I get about 370 miles on average from 40 litres before the dreaded light comes on again. Local driving, no motorways or long dual carriage way journeys.

According to my maths that is 41.6 mpg.

On the odd occasion I've done a motorway trip I haven't found a massive improvement in mpg but haven't done enough to properly compare. And I never floor it on motorways. I drive 60-70mph with revs between 2000-2500.

As a comparison, my previous 1.6 Peugeot Partner (90 PS) got 435 miles per 40 litres. Same local journeys. Which is 48.9 mpg. I liked it. It just flew up any hill. The Connect takes longer to get going.
