Advice for my new van

Postby Welshdean » Mon May 09, 2016 1:55 pm

Hi everyone.
Yesterday I bought a 2004 connect tddi and it had no history with it. I've been told that it's chain driven and I'm thinking of getting it replaced with the water pump for peace of mind.
Can anyone tell me what I need to buy please as I'm not sure what's needed.

Also I'm going to put an engine cleaner in with my diesel but not sure what one is best. Any recommendations please ?

Welcome :D

2004 will have an upper timing belt and a lower timing chain :)
'Technically', they both should be replaced at 150k miles, but changing at least the belt, which is much easier and quicker, will give you some peace of mind, because belts give no warning of failure :(

You were told a 50% truth , chain drives injection pump from crank but a toothed belt drives cam shaft from injection pump and yeas get water pump done at same time as you have to take mostly the same stuff off when doing timing belt

Thanks for the advice. It's on 130k miles at the moment so I'm good for another 20k miles yes ?
Also is there much chance of them breaking relatively sooner ?

If it's on 130k and you don't know if it's been done, then I would get it done sooner rather than later :)

New engines aren't as cheap as belt replacement :( :P

Also, it seems as though the gears are very close together on this van. 2nd and 4th are the main ones. Are they usually close together or could something be wrong

The vans always seem to have close ratio gearboxes, which is useful if you pull heavy loads. A couple of guys on here have fitted Focus boxes, which have wider ratios, and a lower diff ratio

Thanks for the reply.
Do they feel closer compared to normal cars etc etc. The first time driving it I went from third to second lol

Yes, it's much better and relaxed to drive. 2050 rpm at 62 mph, that's a 500 rpm drop.

I may have not explained myself properly so my mistake. But I'm not referring to the gears in general whilst driving I'm talking about the actual gearstick itself. When changing gears it's as though the lever is not moving as normal. It's as though the gears ar close together when moving the stick into position.

Well, at 130,000 miles the gear linkage between the lever and gearbox could be worn.

A mate did selector cables on his.
Think a pattern cable set was 70 quid and he said it was a shite of a job to do.
