Glycol Vs OAT ?

Postby Piglet » Tue May 17, 2016 11:50 am

I never knew antifreeze was such a mine field.
Comma do 2 similar priced products, both red, both concentrate, both longlife.
One is traditional, one is organic.

Anyone know owt about this stuff? What do Ford put in?

Don't know if you can still buy different types depending on whether your engine is iron, alloy, or a combination - so it's certainly a minefield!
I've been using the Glycol based stuff ( red ) for a few years in all family vehicles and never had any trouble. ( Glycol was used in Spitfire engines, so it's ok by me! ) 8)
But if you have BLUE antifreeze in now, it's always best to top up/renew with the same colour, because they are chemically a bit different.

Forgot to say...
If you go on the Euro Car Parts website and put in your reg no. they will show you the recommended anti-freeze. :D

Another forgot. :?

If the pennies will stretch, use 50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water - less corrosion and sludge, and you don't have to worry about the strength when you top it up.

Thanks for that,
I was hoping for 20l of alround universal stuff that I can stick in all the cars, including the boys ally block Lupo.

Might be simpler to just buy it as I need it pre-mixed from ECP, you would hope that would be pre-mixed with deionised water!

Just stick all the reg nos in ECP website - they'll probably recommend red glycol for everything. I've put it in everything from a Perkins Diesel, Saab 900, old camper vans, through to an Astra Turbo and new Megane...
