I think you need to ascertain what caused it to snap. If it was incorrect fitment or re-use of the tensioner then I'd say the garage is liable for the repair bill. But you will need to establish that so best to get an independent report/ assessment done.

Garage has investigated and suspects it was a bent pulley.
I dont know whats involved with a timeing belt replacement or what a kit includes, what pulley could he be referring to ? And surely this should have been spotted during the change, also how come the old belt didnt snap ?

Timing belt 'kit' would normally be belt and tensioner pulley.
Sounds like they are blaming the tensioner pulley.
What brand was the kit?

Yeah kit consists of belt and tensioner.

Did you get the old parts when they changed it? Otherwise, how can you be sure it's actually been changed?

They could also be referring to the camshaft pulley wheel but it should have been obvious if that was the case when they fitted the kit, plus, as you say why did it not do the same thing to theprevious belt.

If they are blaming the tensioner, who supplied the kit, you or them? If them, then it's still their problem even if it's a manufacturing defect as your contract is with them. They would beliable for any defects and would have to pay you out and then take it up with their supplier. What they can't do is blame it on the manufacturer and tell you to take it up with them. If you sourced the kit then you need to take it up with your supplier.

very true i think it is poor workman ship either they have over tightened it,or used old parts and just changed the belt :( either way its down to them and if the parts did fail then the manufactuer will want all parts supplied in the kit back to be inspected before they pay out on any warrenty claim

The pulley at the top (camshaft?) has a dent in it as if it had been pryed with a screw driver, belt had stripped down 1 side and eventually jumped by looks of it, not completely snapped.
Few bent valves, garage going to fix it and also get the head skimmed at THEiR expense!

I would hope they've done a proper job this time, I can't see them wanting to pay out on that lot again.

Well at least they accepted liability and fixed it. Sometimes garages will argue until the cows come home about these things
