2016 Ford Connect 200 L 1 Diesel 1.6 MPG

Postby L60mcm » Thu Nov 17, 2016 4:50 pm

Hi I and relatively new to the world of ford I have just purchased a 2016 Ford Transit Connect 200 L 1 Diesel 1.6. M Sport there is only 600 miles on it now.

My issue is that from all the literature I have seen and people (other owners of similar) I should be getting good MPG (high 50- low 60). When I drove it home form London I was just scraping 40mpg and now with short runs I am lucky if I am getting 30.8MPG still with just me and nothing in the rear.
Don’t get me wrong I am not expecting 60 mpg but nearly less than half is a joke.
Any help recommendations would be great

Thanks

Driving technique is a lot of the problem I'm afraid :-( I have a 2015 240 L2 Limited with the 110ps engine, I'm fully laden at all times, I never turn the A/C off, my main journeys are 4 miles each way often in traffic, when I do a tank to tank on those journeys I get 38mpg when I go on a journey my mpg climbs according to the trip computer regularly to 45-50mpg, the furthest motorway journey I have done so far is Bournemouth to Kent, starting with a full tank, by time I got there I was reading 68.9mpg the return journey was a headwind all the way home & the computer had dropped to 66.2mpg my overall average since new is 47.1mpg My previous connect was 32mpg so I'm very pleased considering the short journeys & the weight I'm running at.
This is how I drive, I'm a former ex HGV owner driver where you become almost obsessed with fuel, 1/4 to 1/2 mpg gain in an artic at 8mpg is a serious saving over the course of a year:-) this apply s to my van with my gearing & engine & seems to work for me :-)
look up the max torque & rpm figures for your engine where the 2 converge is you max rpm to change gear, go beyond that & you waste fuel
1st gear 7-10 mph change to 2nd
2nd gear 18-20 mph change to 3rd
3rd gear 30 mph, stick to this for round town driving, it actually helps you not to speed, use cruise control IF SAFE TO DO SO, for 40 mph accelerate to 40 mph change to 4th
4th gear 40 mph, again this helps you not to speed, use cruise control IF SAFE TO DO SO, for 50 mph accelerate to 50 mph change to 5th
5th gear 50mph, again this helps you not to speed, use cruise control IF SAFE TO DO SO, for 60 mph accelerate to 60 mph change to 6th if the terrain is up & down watch the average mpg & you will soon learn if you would be better of sticking to 5th.
When accelerating use 1/2 throttle, use the engine torque, the van gets there just as quick as flooring it everywhere, I don't drive like a granny I can assure you, rather than rush upto a junction obstacle or roundabout, lift of the throttle & use momentum, you save fuel, brakes & tyres.
Keep your tyre pressures correct.
Don't allow excessive Engine idling
Don't allow the engine to labour but learn how low you can allow the revs to drop & still be able accelerate without flooring the throttle.
Hopefully if you follow all or some of the above & with practice, you can certainly help improve economy :-)
Transit Custom Limited H1 L2 DCIV, now converted to van by removing the seats etc so now twin side loading doors, fully kitted out with Sortimo racking, always loaded to capacity & averages 35mpg :D

Thanks very much for the detailed reply. I understand that short runs are a killer and driving style, but nearly half MPG than other owners. i just want to make sure there is nothing wrong with the Van. hopefully it is just me getting use to the new van. I am yet to carry any weight so i could yet be in the 20-30 mpg range (hopefully not). one of the main justifications for the change was the better MPG over the current vehicle

Mine was fantastic right from the off, I picked it up with 3 miles on the clock, I was due to have my Sortimo racking fitted prior to collecting but the van became available & I was too excited to wait, I ran it for a while empty & was way into the 50's I thought if this is the the start then fully loaded will be very good, I'm chuffed & remain chuffed :-)

I have a 66 plate L2 100ps with the new 1.5 turbo diesel engine. Done 1600 miles so far and getting 52mpg. Not carrying much at the moment just a few boxes
But should get better as it loosens up a bit.

Hi there,

I have exactly the same problem with my transit connect 1.5 turbo, 2016
3,200km.
I brought it back and they found a fault with the egr valve which they reset.
The consumption went up to 40mpg from 35mpg but after 500 km it went back to 33 mpg.
Ford are taking it in to have a look at it on Wednesday but having spoke to the maintenance department I get the feeling they do not know what the problem is.
I have come across one other person who has the same issue and he has been back to his dealer 4 time and it's still not fixed.!!
If you do get sorted you might let me know what the issue was.

Regards,

Murtec

I have to say what a load of bo++++s driving technique my 2014 1.6 trend 95ps delivers over 50mpg week in and week out driven hard soft fully laden empty short or long journeys
can't think of any other type other than rally driving, and to be honest I don't do that in my connect.

you got a problem with the mpg get it back to the stealers

The van went back to the dealer last week and as I suspected they haven't a clue what the problem is.
They are going to get touch with the CTO for the UK to find out if he had come across it.
There is a technical meeting this week in Dublin where they will raise the issue to see if any one else has come across it.
So frustrating!!!!!!!
If I hear anything 'll let you know.

The M-Sport models are conversions or are they limited editions sold in the UK? And who are them sold by?

Hi just a bit of an update. I phone ford when I had 800 miles on it and was told to put miles on it and call back. I did that and booked it in to them today. I have been keeping a record of the mileage which I will attach to the end of this (best I have gotten is 34mpg) anyway ford plugged the van in and have reported back that there is nothing wrong with the van and the mpg I am getting is normal

This is way out for my liking, is it another cover up for the VW diesel scam? who knows? all I know is that I get fifty miles to the gallon, confirmed both with trip computer and
manual calculation, I will NOT be getting any software updates for my 1.6 2014 trend 95ps connect at any time in the future! 49000 miles on the clock
