Project Connect

Postby mk2dk » Sun Dec 04, 2016 8:36 pm

Hi.
I'm a new member on the forum.
Always had a spot for these small vans, but never owned one, until now :) Engine has a bearing fault due to the former owner forgot to thighten the oil filter when he did an oil change. Got the car home on a trailer and started this morning. The car has been left under a tree for 1 month and it looks terrible. Plan is to either repair the engine or replace it with a used one. Both drive shafts, radiator and exhaust down pipe are removed by now. Hopefully the engine is out during next couple of days. It won't win any beauty competitions but hopefully a good clean and perhaps painting the wheels, will make it look a little better.
Forgot to take a picture before starting, but will do better pics as the project progress :D
(Not sure if this is the right place for this kind of topic ?)

I'll look for pictures of the mk2.

This is probbably a dumb question, but what does the badge on the drivers door mean ? It says : T220 LX
Today Fuel lines, gear cables, clutch line, gearbox mount and power steering pipes were disconnected. Small steps in the right direction :)

Lx is level of trim. Might be heated mirrors and screen. Elec windows and fogs.

Hi.
Engine's out and stripped down :D
Lots of bits and pieces have been cleaned, still a lot left to clean, but I'm slowly getting there. It's now very obvious the engine has a big end bearing fault. Took the crankshaft and conrod to a machine shop, they did some measurering, and unfortuanietely the parts are broken beyond repair :( Oversized bearing shells are available up to +0.50 mm, which isn't enough to clean up the crank damage. Luckily rest of the engine looks fine.
Right now I'm looking for another crank, which isn't the easiest part to find in Denmark. Perhaps a complete engine :(
A nice surprice is a diesel heater mounted on the firewall behind the engine, don't know if all Connects have that option from the factory ? Or is it due to our long cold winters.

The aux heater is standard for Nordic areas, also seen on many German models.

Hi.
Having a couple of days off work, means more time in the garage. All engine parts are cleaned and ready for assembly. I now know what EGR gunk is . . . Damn that sh*t is sticky and BLACK. EGR is definately going to be blanked off.
In the back of the van, parts a starting to pile up. Gaskets, bearings, piston rings, water pump and a new sump has arrived, still waiting for a chain/belt set and used crankshaft. Took the head apart, as the the gasket set contains new valve stem seals, and I might as well use them. Lapped the valves today, really enjoyed it, one of the things learned in school that you never forget :D
Cleaned and inspested the oil pump and pressure relief valve. Looked fine and within specs. Unfortuanietely all glow plugs seams dead :(
