Wet belt or not wet belt

Postby KempieConnect » Tue Jan 31, 2017 11:48 pm

I've asked the local garage to replace my Connect T200L cambelt and wetbelt. They called me an hour later and said my engine was a chain not a wetbelt.

Can anyone here confirm this for me?

ETIS says my van is

Hi KempieConnect.
Yes I can confirm it. Just changed mine on a T220LX.
A double-chain from crank to fuel pump, and a normal rubber T-belt from fuel pump to camshaft.

Wet belt was fitted from around 2008/2009, someone else may confirm the year, anything up until then will be a chain :)

Thank you mk2dk and Altransit

mk2dk. What year is your engine? I had the external timing belt changed.

Is there a way of finding out for sure. From what Altransit says, my engine is on the cusp. Can I discover the truth from the engine number?

2009 model should have a lower belt in oil *wet belt"

Ford TSB

8/11/10 Fuel injection pump on 1.8L Duratorq-TDCi (Lynx) Diesel service engines equipped with the crankshaft timing sprocket belt-in-oil system

On vehicles with Lynx diesel series build from 10/2007 onwards the crankshaft timing sprocket which drives the fuel injection pump sprocket by means of a chain drive has been changed to the belt-in-oil system.
1.8L Duratorq-TDCi (Lynx) Diesel service engines with Siemens fuel injection pump will be delivered with the new belt-in-oil system only.

UPDATE

I took the van back to the garage yesterday after the comments on here. Thank you to those who contributed

The mechanic said the engine is the same as the Mondeo so has a chain not a wet belt. We rang Ford and gave the VRM and VIN. They said...

It has a wet belt.

Many apologies from the garage, gratefully accepted

Booked in Friday for the replacement

Yes, the later Mondeos do have a ribbed belt. There is a chap here who replaces them back to the chain as the the ribbed belts seem to be failing. All down to Ford cutting corners. I am wanting to know whether the later Connects can have a chain put back in. Seems it might well be the case.

See the cracking and perishing on the belt he shows you at 8.40, Interesting vid:

Thanks for the link Bighopper, I saw the cracking. Ford say 125k for the replacement. My van is at 101k but thought I'd get it done early than risk the snap

The wet belt was replaced yesterday. The garage charged me £425 and said that was a discounted price. They said it was a bitch of a job to replace.
