ABS & BTCS Warning Lights Permanently On

Postby Lefty64 » Thu Feb 09, 2017 9:09 pm

Haven't been here for ages, but this popped up today.

The van is braking fine. Discs all round & traction control BTW.
Only 28K on the clock from new (unbelievable I know) but her disc parts are a bit rusty as she's always out in cold.

Should I worry?

Sounds like an ABS sensor has gone down. Usually the end has been scrubbed off by the rust that accumulates on the outer CV joint.

Thankyou.

If there are any other possible causes I'd be grateful
.
The handbook says that both these systems stop working if a fault is registered.
Is this true, and is this an automatic MOT failure also? If so, will need to find a few pennies.

If it was anything serious it would be having a serious effect on your braking. You could flip the bonnet up and check the fluid level in your resevoir. Is the brake pedal rock hard with the motor running? I would bet it is just a wheel sensor though. You will have one on each hub.

Front two are different to the rear two, although they aren't handed. Easy to replace. Only problem you might have to clean the rust from the CV joint that goes in the knuckle as that will be what destroyed end of the sensor in the first place. Also, the small retaining bolt can be rusted in and the head rounded off. I can almost guarantee it will be the one of the front sensors. Yes, I think it is an MOT failure if the ABS light is on.

Checked, but reservoir okay, pedal, and braking too.
Will get on with the fix as the lights are niggling me.

Thanks again.
