Just thought I'd put this on here as it may help out someone else.
I bought a 53 plate 1.8 TDCI Connect at the weekend as a non runner.
It died on the guys driveway and he was advised that it needed a fuel pump as it would run on Easy Start
So I got it home and started to have a nosey around. I suspected that it wasn't the fuel pump as up until the time it died it had apparently been running perfectly fine.
I checked for fuel at the pump supply line and found it was empty. Decided to open up the fuel filter to see if there was any sign of swarf. Luckily there was no signs of swarf, but there was quite a lot of black crap in there and the filter element was black.
Fitted a new Bosch fuel filter which I primed with new fuel. I left the feed pipe from filter to pump disconnected then poured fuel down the pump feed pipe then had my son crank the engine. I could see the fuel being sucked in to the pump which was looking hopeful.
I did this another 3 times to prime the pump then reconnected the feed pipe back up to the filter. Cranked it over and it fired in to life and ran perfectly.
So the moral of this story is maybe to always seek a second opinion.
Was a result for me, not so much for the guy I bought it from who had paid £2000 for it 5 months ago !
