It could be the compressor itself too. You could try applying 12v to the compressor directly, using a powerprobe, and see if the clutch kicks in  If it doesn't, then the compressor is at fault :(
 Have you checked to see if it's fully gassed :?:

yes i did think it may be a compressor fault and no i have not checked if its gassed by my theory was if i could hear the clutch kicking in i would then get it gassed , or will the clutch not kick in if there is no gas ?

If you give it direct power, then the clutch will operate, but I'm not sure if it will do it normally if there's no gas :?

My compressor on the Mk7 is the same, I have a new one waiting to be fitted, which I've already checked with the powerprobe :)

i will check that in the week and see if i get power from the plug .

reading up i found there 2 a high and low switch , if one of these fail i guess that would stop compressor working ?

It could be those, and it could also be the fan not engaging  Have you checked the relay and fuses for the fan and compressor :?:

I have 3 Fords with non-working aircon, all with different faults: One has a gas leak which I cant find, one has a faulty compressor clutch, and the other one I haven't managed to suss out yet :!:
