How much do garages charge to change a rear bumper

Postby JayKay3000 » Sun Jul 02, 2017 1:08 pm

Hi All.

2005 connect - changing rear bumper.

Does anyone know how much I can expect to pay a garage to change the bumper? I have the replacement parts.

It looks like a 30 minute job if you have the right tools and it goes to plan.

I had £20 to £30 in mind, but thought I'd ask here to get a ballpark figure.

I did buy a 15mm long socket for the job, but either it's wrong or the nut is just rusted out as it grips and then spins. I can't tell if it's coming off as I'm on the floor with a towbar hogging most of the room.

Two nuts that are potentially corroded, it’s a pain in the arse job by the sound of it, so expect to pay PIA labour rate.

Best thing to do is ask the garage how much it will cost with parts supplied, if they come back with an hours labour about 50 - 60 sovs pay up front so they wont drag it out, I did that when I needed a starter motor changing on my car, it took them nearly 2 hours but as I had paid cash upfront they didn't charge me anymore :D N

Yep, about 1 hour. I'm going to try and get my phone up there to take a pic.

One place quoted me £30, but of course 'everyone is busy'. I'm going to try a small shop I know of.

With the tow bar it is a right pain.

I was going to prep the bumper and re-paint it, but I still think it will be cheaper (now I have the part) to fit a new one.

It's technically simple as it's two bolts, but it's open to the elements and I would guess the bolts are corroded. I should have softened some of the rust with penetrating fluid first. Still - will be worth it. The current white bumper has a serious case of gingivitis and the grey one will look 10x better.

Book time for rear bumper is 0.3 hours. If they spot its a pig before ploughing on with it they may well advise you in advance it's going to cost more.

Well, the charged me £100 and to be honest it's about the worst job I ever saw.

The end caps though not oem fell off on the motorway nearly hitting other cars and the step they glued on and it's already coming off after 1 day. They had not even tried to take the old fittings out and use them.

I nearly got my tools out and the tore the thing off. The van has been in a rear hit, but any garage worth its name can work around it.

So pissed as I'm supposed to be taking it camping next Thursday and they had it for a week and it looks worse than ever.

I'm going back tomorrow, but I'm gradually starting to hate these end caps. The ebay 'oem' ones all seem to be garbage.

So tired of this van - 9 months I've been having work done to it and every panel uncovers more rubbish repairs. :(

I just wanted to get it looking 'reasonable' and then save for something better. This was the last job to do to it. But to be honest. I've seen a lot worse for sale for more money than I got this one for.

Uggg, they had a bunch of five star reviews and they said they could do it. But, looking at the old one the bumper would have fallen off of it's own accord anyway in a year or so ;)

Let’s be real for a moment. It’s over 10 years old, you’re not going to be the first person to do repairs on the cheap.
