Belt/chain service intervals?

Postby pl01 » Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:51 pm

Hi All,

I've just brought a dayco cambelt kit for my 06 TDCI which has just covered 100k. Although I'm now wondering if I have to change the chain at the same time, or even if I have the chain or wet belt......? Are both of these usually changed at the same time?

Thanks in advance.....

06 will be chain, ford recommend chaining it BUT there's not many that get changed, ive seen some mk1 focus tdci (same engine) with 400.000 miles on running on the original chain
Please don't send me PM's, i can't access them, when I try I get this:

I did think it was chain as have searched on the forum and everyone was pointing towards it. My only concern is I get a serious 'worrying' clonking/chattering rattle very occasionally on start up 'once every couple of months maybe' and for the life of me can't establish exactly where it is coming from, I did think it was the drive coupling on the alternator but cant be sure and now think possibly the chain / tensioner..........it goes after about 30 seconds, or if you turn off and start up again. The chain looks like an expensive kit to purchase, but obviously not as expensive as a failed one! The intermittent noise I mention is definitely coming from the belt/chain side of the engine.

Well I see from another thread on here that ford state chain should be changed at 150k miles / 10 years. Looks like a pig of a job

Yes lower timing chain to be replaced at 150,000 miles. Fairly straight forward to do.
Top timing belt a lot sooner

It's more it seems most people don't seem to bother with a chain replacement, if these chains last so long why are ford stating it must be changed at 150k.........

That might depend on what you do for a day time job.
I thought it was a complete ball ache.

Did you do this as part of the maintenance schedule or was there a problem with your connect?

I had oil leaks, timing case had to come off.
I had to drill out 2 cover bolts and the whole job took me forever.
Fine now though.
