Glow plug light flashes sometimes (really steep hills)

Postby JayKay3000 » Wed Aug 02, 2017 9:15 pm

Hi Folks.

So I did a tour of wales last week in the van (1.8 tdci 2005 lwb) and came to a steep, twisty road section near a welsh castle. Maybe 25%.

The van struggled, getting some wheel spin on one of the tight turns as I fought to keep the power on. I had to pull over at a point and had to use about 2k worth of revs to get the van going again.

Once at the top I noticed the glow plug light flashing, the van was driving just fine so I pulled over for 10 seconds. Turned the engine off and turned it back on. The light went away and I carried on. Engine ran perfect. Later that day I came to a steep single track hill where I used second, ran out of power, went to first, ran out of power and had to roll the short distance back down to start off in first. Once rolling all was well and the van dragged itself up using around 2-3k rpm and all was fine.

I had the glow plug issue another time in the wet, on the flat where I just turned the engine on and for some weird reason the turbo didn't engage and after a mile the glow plug light was flashing and I pulled over, turned it off and let the light go out before starting the engine. No more issue and the turbo has never failed to work since.

Overall the vans engine runs fine, the turbo doesn't engage till 2k rpm, but generally it doesn't matter and it normally loves a good climb. I guess I just have to baby it a bit if I encounter really steep Welsh single track hills again.

I've got a few ideas in mind what it could be and I did read a couple of older posts from 2012, but interested if it's a similar issue.

That's exactly what started to happen in my TDCI '06 as well.

Read the codes, and after confirming with a leakdown test, it was treated to a full set of recon injectors!

Been perfect ever since then.

Hi.

Thanks for the help, I guess I'll have to avoid massive hills for now.
