Heated Windscreen Issue

Postby axxeman » Sun Nov 05, 2017 5:00 pm

My 04 plate had to have the screen renewed recently. The guy from Auto Windscreens was pretty pleasant and efficient BUT when I turned on the heater last eve, (first time that I have needed it since fitting), nothing happened. Switch illuminated OK but zero demisting. I left it for 3-4 minutes and still nowt.

The old screen used to work within 90 seconds and so that was what I was expecting. Is that too soon? Do new windscreens take longer or do I have a problem ..? I figure that with the switch illuminating that there isn't a fuse gone awol.

Thanks,

Greg

Are you sure it was replaced with another electric screen or just a standard one? Did the screen fitter remember to connect it, Or it could be a fuse.

As above, and also could be that the power connectors were damaged or corroded

You could check for voltage at the connectors, either side of the screen, under the scuttle :)

Check they have put the relays back in, when I had mine done with autoglass they took the relays with them  I liberated two from a scrap mondeo for 50p. N

When I had mine done, the autoglass fitter checked the new screen was working before he fitted it, and again after he finished. You can feel the warmth with a bare hand.

And look closely for the tiny wiggly elements going vertically down the screen. If you see none, its not a heated screen. I had to ask twice when i ordered my new one that it was heated.

Been waiting for a suitable day/night to check it.

The switch illuminates, no relays were touched or removed. My old one would provide clear lines, (some areas were not working), within about 90 seconds of being switched on but this new one does nothing after even 5 minutes. Yes, I can see filaments in the glass and I did ask the fitter if it was heated before he started. Does it really get warm enough to check by mere touch? And if I ring Auto Windscreens, will they charge me if I am proved to be wrong?

I do not know what to do ... help!

I am having problems with mine that was replaced about 6 months ago, and again, i have only just been able to fully test it. Found that there are big sections not working.
But getting back to the point, these windscreens come with a warranty, so i will be phoning the company that installed mine and seeing what can be done. It's always worth going back to the company that fitted it as it will carry some sort of warranty - especially if (like yours) it doesn't work at all! We only know if they work when it comes to this time of year, so the odds are good that they will be able to help.

Good luck mate, post an update, and i will do the same when i have had a word.

Hmm, according to what I was told, the new screen is lifetime of the vehicle warrantied ... Of course, when push meets shove, the wriggling may commence.

Update.

Finally, an evening where it was frozen over. (Never thought that I'd be happy to see that!). Anyway, flicked the switch and although I thought that nothing much was going on, within 2 minutes the ice had become water droplets so I guess that it's OK ...

Thanks for input,

Greg
