07 Connect EML (P0380)

Postby T i m » Thu Nov 16, 2017 5:02 pm

Hi all,

Daughters 07 Connect came up with the EML the other day so I plugged my Forscan OBD lappy in and found a few codes and (saved them, shown below) and could clear all but one (P0380)?

However, the EML light then went off and I believe has stayed off since (couple of days now).

I appreciate most these codes could be old but I'll post them all (pre clearing) in case they might suggest to someone something that could do with some closer inspection?

Cheers, T i m

Thanks for that g-man, we'll give the low plugs a check over.

Would /do these 1.8 lumps actually need glow plugs in the sort of temperatures we have seen so far? I ask because I know if I didn't give my old Rover 218SD (1.9 Pug lump) a few seconds of glow plugs it would really rattle and clatter for a good few seconds?

Maybe the Connect puts and holds them on automatically for a while?

I would like to know the answer to this too! I had all 4 plugs replaced last year after it was found that ALL 4 were not working! The van, although started on the button, was smokey.

Glow plugs in modern diesel engine are to reduce emissions at cold start
Please don't send me PM's, i can't access them, when I try I get this:

Well,

I've just got round to looking at this and think I've found what might be a / the problem?

Where the engine bay loom joins the heavy wire that feeds the glow plugs they join on some plastic looking fitting that bolts to the front of the block and provides a threaded stud / terminal that a ring terminal on the end of the feed wire bolts onto, a bit like an alternator connector or a very old ignition coil. ;-)

Pre noticing that this connection / fitting was melted and that the stud would just lift out easily, I measured no volts on the glow plugs (glow plug light on dash). After pulling this stud out and pushing it back in again (I'm not sure I should be able to do that?) I saw ~14V on the glow plug bus (with the engine running) and a bit of smoke coming off around said connection.

So, is this device *just* a connector, a way of taking the heavy wire from the glow plugs and connecting it the the loom or does it contain something subtle (like a fuse etc)? Is it melting what it's designed to do under some fault conditions (like a shorted glow plug)?

Checking on here it looks like it is a known (if not common) issue but with no real pointers to the exact cause?
