Sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

Postby Smegmium » Sun Nov 26, 2017 5:14 pm

Afternoon all.
Just picked up a 2005 T220 Connect Tdi (75), and being my 3rd Connect I thought I knew what to expect.

However its monumentally sluggish, It gets up to speed, eventually, but struggles up hills and would seriously struggle to even move the skin off a limp rice pudding.

Its not in limp-home mode or anything (been there before), its just has far less "Go" than my previous ones.

Where should I start looking?
I think its boosting, can't hear any induction leaks...

It's an ex water-board van with 130k miles, is it possible its intentionally de-tuned?

Have you checked how old the fuel filter is, it might be clogged up?

Thanks guys, well first step is a full service (Filters, oil) and a good poke about to check EGR function, probably block it, and make sure everything is connected properly (I've seen mention of vacuum tubes getting mixed up and sensor wires breaking...)

Haven't had a chance to even lift the bonnet yet since I got it (Yesterday)!!!

It was cheap enough, I can deal with a few niggles :-)

So, I havent had a chance to do anything yet, but this morning the thing took 3 attempts to start.
fired and died immediately, then again, then started.

For me this points towards a stuck OPEN EGR valve.

Just received a blanking plate in the post, may try to fit it tonight.

Not very chatty on here are you?!!!

OK so, because I HATE it when people ask for advice, get it, then fix the thing and don't finish the thread by posting the fix...

I took the induction pipes off to check them over (all fine but quite oily) - all fine along with the intercooler, sensors etc.
Wedged in an EGR blocking plate (getting the bolts loose wasnt easy.)

And went for a test drive - IT WORKS!
Heard the turbo spool up and it was significantly less sluggish than before.

Still its a large metal shed with 75bhp, so bloody slow, but not embarrassing now :-D

DIAGNOSIS: EGR valve stuck open.

The ci is a tiny bit quicker than the di.

You have to inertia drive these things like a 1.0 engine car. Foot to the floor and done brake for any corners. or be prepared to spend the next 10 years getting up to speed.
