Electrical gremlin - help needed

Postby menging » Fri Dec 08, 2017 8:45 pm

Hello all.

I have a Transit Connect 2005 1.8 diesel 75HP.

- The fuel gauge stands still and doesn't work.
- The windshield wiper interval and defog function does not work, I have to hold down defog to make it move.
- Recirculate air button does not work, atleast no light in it when I press it.
- Reversing lights does not work. No power at bulb, but power at fuse below steering wheel.

A Ford mechanic said it might be the comfort module, and said the whole fuse box under steering wheel was the comfort module.

All these are seemingly unrelated but does anyone have any ideas about what might be the problem? Would greatly appreciate tips. This the only thing letting this car not be a great car:)

Comfort Module :?: If he means 'body control module' then I'm not sure that a 2004 van has one :? Maybe someone else on here can advise :?: :)

I would start by checking all of the fuses in all of the boxes (remove, test, replace), and un-plugging and re-plugging the fuse box and speedo head connectors. That stuff is all free to do :)

Google is always a good start, if not, then get a Haynes manual. Good advice from Al about testing all the fuses first! And I own a 54 plate, and it does not have a comfort module. Much the same layout as a MK1 focus as far as system goes. Ever with A/c.

Hi, thought I would check back here. I will check all the earthing points, Kenton. Thanks.

The quick wipe function of the wipers came back. The wiper relay was 4 pinned in a 5 pinned socket. After inserting a 5 pinned relay it now works. Not the intermittent wipe though, so going to check the wiper switch itself.

The reversing lights are okay after changing the reversing light switch. I bridged the 2-pin contact (fused bridge of course) that went to the switch, and they lit up.

The progress on the tank gauge: I have measured continuity betwee 2 wires from the fuel sensor(had to drop the tank) and the contact in the instrument cluster. They are fine. So on to the fuel sensor in the tank itself I suppose?

So far, thanks for the help.

Hello again.

Sorry for the bump, I thought it was better to use this thread.

I noticed something weird with the gauges; immediately after startup they stand still in the bottom position, even the tachometer. Them after 10 seconds or so, they all jump up to the correct position (rpm, speed and temp). The fuel level sensor doesn't work still, and hasn't been working for a long time.

I now have replaced instrument cluster with a used one and the fuel gauge now works, but the delay is exactly as before, even the fuel gauge has delay.

Besides the delay after startup, everything works.

I ran odometer diagnostic and got dtc 9359. I tried to search but didn't find any good info on it.

Anyone have any ideas?

But there
