EGR clean or replace ??

Postby Chris1979 » Tue Jan 02, 2018 6:18 pm

Hi all , I've just purchased my first van, a 2008 transit connect 1.8 tdci swb. The problem started about 10 miles down the road from purchasing the van when the engine management light popped up ! I've not been able to get clarification until today when I got the van diagnosed in work, it's showing "P0490 EGR control circuit-high" I've had the code cleared but suspect it'll pop back on when I'm travelling home later.
So I'm now in a predicament to either clean the EGR that's on the van or buy a new unit ( EGR attached to inlet manifold)
Does anybody know if cleaning the EGR would be sufficient enough to keep the engine light from coming back on or will I have to fork out on a new unit for £200 on eBay? Expensive this time of year ?
Also would blanking the EGR keep the light out ? Thanks in advance for anyone that can shed some light on my troubles :)

I have just purchased one of these:

I am going to use the Wynn's cleaner first, then replace the EGR motor and blank the EGR. Will take it from there.

Thanks for the replies but I'm going down the remap route.
It's going to cost me £200 + labour to get a new EGR , there's a garage near me that'll remap the van so that it'll not only save on juice but also wipe the EGR , no more engine management light :-) ... I think I'll still need to put a blanking plate on but that's no biggie.

if you're doing that best to get the inlet manifold cleaned out, with that mileage it'll be full of gunge

EGR valves are closed when accelerating. They are open when engine is at idle & when slowing down.
On your 2008 Connect. Main fault will be with EGR Elec actuator itself. See vid here  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8Uaisbylfk

I would advise against mapping out EGR valve or fitting a blanking plate.....

Due to NEW MOT rules coming into effect as of 20th May 2018 see here  viewtopic.php?f=5&t=184386.

Any tampering or removal will result in automatic MOT refusal :!: As they are part of emissions controls systems.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated!
I was thinking of getting one of those companies to come out and hook my car up to a machine that cleans the engine and EGR of carbon build up ( apparently ) Do you think that'll work or will I have to get it taken off and cleaned the old fashioned way with diesel and elbow grease ?
