Clutch question ..?

Postby axxeman » Sun Jan 21, 2018 3:01 pm

"How long is a piece of string?" BUT;

What would you consider to be an average number of miles on one clutch given that 80% of your mileage is on motorways in 5th and not urban chop and change driving? I have done 70k on a clutch that was changed sometime before I took ownership and was just starting to wonder how much longer I could reasonably expect to get AND what the symptoms of a wearing clutch plate are (apart from the usual slippage under acceleration)?

Thanks,

Greg

My van spent it's life before me driving around south london. It had 100k on the clock when I took ownership and the clutch was starting to slip, and the plate was warped. So changed changed them and I have since done 35k of mainly suburban and motorway miles on it. It is a lot down to the type of driving the van does, and the type of driver! You will notice juddering under pull away if the clutch plate becomes warped.

Just my tuppence worth.

Ah, thanks you for that. I am a bit of a "pipe and slippers" type of driver as I really hate things breaking down and so try to make my stuff last through careful usage. Sounds like I might be Ok for a while yet.

Can you recall what the parts cost you when you changed?

Think ford charge around £450 - £500 to supply and fit. Had mine done by a mate after i had the van re maped by van tunner and my mate charged me £350 supply and fit.

Dont buy cheap though as ive read there no good. Best to by ford one mate

My ex royal mail van has done 76k and the clutch is starting to slip. It does judder away from junctions too.

I'm guessing it's previous life would have seen lots of clutch use and short runs
