Cambelt and Wet Belt Change to be done....

Postby dave750 » Sun Jan 28, 2018 7:47 pm

Hi Guys, looks like it is time to bite the bullet and get both the cambelt and wet belt changed on my Ford Transit Connect 2010 model. I recently bought the van and it has a full service history but no record of the belts being changed, the mileage is 90K. Are there any mechanics on the forum or recommendations based around North Lincolnshire area who are able to complete the job for me please. I am not too sure what the cost is likely to be but for sure it will be cheaper than a new engine if things go t~ts up. Look forward to hearing back from you guys.

I have just done this. I used everything that was genuine Ford, personally I wouldn't trust no-name parts for such a vital function. You would be off your head to put one of those laughable rubber belts back in, just a disaster waiting to happen. I hear they don't snap, rather they strip the teeth off the belt and destroy the motor. The cambelt on mine could have done another 50,000, it was in good nick. The problem I encountered was when I went and removed the engine mount bracket which released the pressure on the timing case causing the gasket to fail. The water-pump housing started weeping coolant through the engine mount holes, I had to then strip the whole lot back to the engine block to fit a new timing case gasket. I replaced the waterpump, cam seal, idler and belt whilst there.

Oh, and contary to what Ford say, I reckon my motor is quieter with the chain in than it was with the silly belt. Ford talking bollocks to cover their penny pinching and corner cutting.

Thanks for the reply. Keep the replies coming guys. Looks like it will be chain conversion from the original wet belt. Do Ford do the chain conversion kits?. Still looking for a mechanic who can do the job if anyone can help.

These are all the genuine Ford Part numbers that I used for mine.

The chain tensioner is bloody expensive from Ford, but make sure you get one as the differ from the tensioner used on the rubber belt.

There are pattern ones available, like this:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-1-8-TDC ... SwxX1ZzUm8

Don't know what its like though, but instead of £110.00 from Ford it is only £23.00 quid.

Crank seal Finis: 1198045

Chain timing gear tensioner Finis: 1105977

4x allen M8 pump hub bolts Finis: 1508244

Pump hub Finis: 1352698

Crank pulley bolt Finis: 1139286

Timing Gear Cover Gasket Finis: 1113202

Timing Gear back plate Seal Finis: 1810619

Chain timing cassette kit Finis: 1198056

------------

Cam belt kit Finis: 1201255

waterpump Finis: 1131878

Aux tensioner Idler Pulley Finis: 1145493

Front camshaft seal Finis: 1207619

Done a few wet belts inc stripped ones.
They’re pretty rubbish... fail prematurely and generally a bad idea.
Dayco do a BIO kit (Belt In Oil) that’s good quality. It’s a pretty involved process but escencial on these.
Heard of people converting back, think if you replace the cassette kit and tensioner for the chain type, that’s all that’s needed... but do check this out first. I believe there’s loads of folk on the mondeo forums that have converted.
