Fuel gauge working intermittently - Connect 2004 @123000 km

Postby Shitblast » Tue Mar 20, 2018 1:06 am

There are creaky sounds coming from the dashboard, with the ignition on, before turning the engine. The fuel gage will mostly not rise at all. Sometimes, it rises a little, shakes, and falls back to where it started. Then sometimes, it will rise, but stop randomly, within an interval that matches the volume in the tank. The other gauges seem to work fine.

Some youtube-video suggested heating the panel on an oven. I took it out, and put it on a radiator, at about 85 Celcius, for two hours, and put it back in. No effect. The condensators look fine, and there are no signs of rust anywhere. Not on the contacts either.

This is the model I have:

Is it possible to replace the instrument cluster with one from the junkyard? Will I need to reprogram the ECU after that?

Yeah, just get another from 02 onwards to 09 or 10 (i think) and it's just plug and play, no coding to worry about. Just temporarily replaced mine and it was from a 2002 works fine on all essential dials, but only snags are that the leds have dimmed over the years, the mileometer is reading 308,000 miles! Lol. And the same problem as my original has: the trip reset button and clock set buttons are prone to stop working, which this had, so not only can you not reset the trip, but you can't set the clock either! So male sure the replacement you get is in full working order! Getting my original fully serviced - hence the temporary replacement.

That's good to know, Kenton. In the meantime, however, I took it apart. Here are pictures from the solderings behind the two contacts. Can you guys see any solderings gone bad?

..and by the way, Kenton. In another thread, someone said this:

paul2012 wrote:Yes Connect TDCI instrument cluster will work on a TDDI. - BUT only early 2000-2006 Clusters.

One from 2006-2009 Connect won't work in a 2000-2006 connect & vice versa due to communication protocols between cluster & PCM.
(SCP on early Connects & HS-CAN from 2006 onwards)

Proposition:
What would you guys think if I put a heat-gun to the solderings, to re-flow them. Would I risk overheating anything else?

So, I put everything back together, without heat-gunning anything yet, as I needed to go for a drive. Now, the tacho and speedo won't work either. I suspect it may have something with to do with the tacho- and speedo-indicator arms taking the stepper motor rod with them when I lifted them from the cluster assembly front. Will the stepper motor work after reinserting the motor arm?

I also did the dash cluster self-report-and-calibrate procedure a couple of days ago- inserting the key, pressing the right pushrod, and turning on the ignition. All the arms arced across fine, except for the fuel gauge, which made rickety movements and sounds, and did not return to its starting point.

Ok, Karl :-). In the meantime, I ordered a used one from the yard. I've also managed to get the speedo and tacho to work again. It turned out that I had to pull the stepper motor arm somewhat back after inserting it. It didn't help just inserting it.

Crap, the used one from the yard doesn't show the right mileage for the car. Works fine otherwise. Is the mileage not stored in the ECU, but in the instrument cluster?
