Belt/chain/wet belt?

Postby APH » Thu Apr 12, 2018 1:18 am

Hi All, was just wondering when the change over years / periods where for belts / chains etc and if my 2007 connect would be wet belt, or chain? I assume it has two belts, or a belt / chain set up? Don't know much about the connect engines yet.

Chain/wetbelt on the bottom. Ford say 100K I think, most others seem to disagree.
Conventional belt on the top, 60K? something like that.
Top belt fairly straightforward, chain/wetbelt a ball ache.

I did my lower belt at around 50k. Not interested in that mess, so I swapped it over as soon as I had managed to buy all the parts, and good riddance to it!

The cambelt on mine was like new and would have probably lasted another 100k. I suppose it would be the bearing in the tensioner that might go down before the actual belt.

Neither are hard as such, a lot of components have to be removed to do the lower chain though. You will need a few tools and a half decent place to work. Also, pray the timing cover gasket doesn't fail when you remove the engine mount bracket. "Hit and miss" as to whether it fails or not, "a chance you have to take", and all that, from what I understand.

Ford states lower timing chain to be replaced at 150,000 miles.

A belt-in-oil is more prone to failure than chain

It's worse than that as it isn't even in a clean oil bath, it's in heavily contaminated sump oil. Sump oil that has also been subjected to the detritus the E.G.R. has been throwing at it. It's absolutely ridiculous. My cynical side always asks. Is Ford doing this so the motor has set lifespan, and when expired, you have to buy another?

Yes because it now all about profit and not customer service anymore, no company manufacturers anything that's built to last these days, the more they sell the more proffit they make and the more they make the higher up the list they climb
Please don't send me PM's, i can't access them, when I try I get this:
