Rear crank seal

Postby Piglet » Wed Apr 18, 2018 4:47 pm

Dilemma,
While clutch is out do I renew rear crank seal or just leave well alone.
It's not leaking, van only does 5K/year and it looks like an expensive seal.

Vans done 107K, how long do they usually last??

I haven't been to this side of my van's engine yet (probably won't be long until I will be though). If I was in behind the gearbox and my van had done nearly 110k, I would replace a seal as a matter of course.

I didn't do it in the end.
No sign of any weeping so I went with the do not disturb philosophy.
At 5000 miles/year I'm putting my money on the seal outliving the body.

Anyway, I'm now an expert at getting the box in & out. Only took me all evening to wrestle it back into place last night.

You made the right decision not changing the seal.
I ordered a new from my local Ford dealership and they told me they'd experienced big problems fitting new rear crank seal. The seal comes with a plastic mounting tool from the factory, to make sure it's centered around the crank. It's important it's mounted dry using this plastic ring. the seal is only available from Ford and cost 100£ :(
Guess I was lucky, the new seal isn't leaking :D :D

Thanks, I feel better already.
What mileage/age did yours fail at?

Car had done 100K miles but actually it didn't fail. I bought the car with a damaged engine and had to change the crank. Thought it would be wise to change the seal, once the engine was apart as it wouldn't get any easier than now. Realised the seal wasn't included in the engine gasket set and had to buy it from Ford. It's a pretty big metal item with a vulcanised seal. I was lucky, no leaking yet :)
