well just to add to this thread, Christmas eve on the way to work in the dark, I put main beam on and on came my battery light, instantly assumed it was the alternator - on the way home it didn't come on until I put my lights on, had already pee'd the wife off royally by getting her to go to the local parts place and get me an exchange unit - including belt 150quid give or take the odd pound, so I was quite pleased it packed up again lol .... anyway, got the festive celebrations out of the way and fitted the new alternator today - surprise surprise the light came on again after thirty seconds of running, turned it off, started again and it came on again after thirty seconds..... very unhappy! decided to search this forum, found this thread - removed the short wiring loom from the alternator and went in the garage and did a continuity test on the three wires - the blue one was not creating a circuit, removed plastic casing and there it was broken blue wire!!!!!!!!! brilliant!!! at least I know the alternator is now new!
