Postby airconman » Thu Dec 30, 2010 6:09 pm

Whose changed theres recently?
How often do you change them?
What make did you buy and roughly at what cost?
And you dont have to warm the engine up do you before replacing?
lot of questions lol.

I only buy ngk or bosch usually

Best price for bosch is single for 8.31
best price for ngk is set of 4 for 37.95 and single 8.90

can any1 beat these prices?

Thanks phil

I changed mine last friday, bought 4 Bosch off fleabay, £33 including post.
Vehicle had been difficult to start all the previous week, starts first time again now.
Bench tested all 4 I took out, did not even get warm.
Only had the van a few months, started fine every day till the cold snap.
I have no idea if they were the originals, cant remember the name now, made in ireland. (out of wood)(LOL) :D

Yes, just changed the amount to 4.
Came withinn 3 days, in a jiffy bag.(in their boxes)
Only took about an hour to fit.
I had to buy a 3/8 drive long 10mm socket to change them, as a half inch drive is far too fat to get through the holes.
A little tip, so as not to drop the little nuts that hold the loom on the glow plugs, I put a bit of grease in the little socket, whick held onto the nut.
(I did this as I keep dropping little things into the engine bay, never to be seen again.)
My engine bay is the Bermuda Triangle for nuts and bulbs. :(
The glow plugs need tighening to 15nm I think

i just bought mine from the local parts place 5.72 + vat each so pretty good alot cheaper than ebay nearly 2 quid each. so all tolled for my service is:
£21 for 7 litres of castrol
£27.47 for four glow plugs
£2.05 for a MANN air filter
£5.35 for a MANN oil filter

So 55.87 for a service with decent parts not bad

Watch when you unscrew the oil filter, the oil trickles along the filter, and comes out through and behind the offside wheel suspension thingy.
Have a big bowl ready.

You just need to be ready with some rags and some news paper, you only loose the oil thats in the oil filter so probably only about a quarter of a litre. Warm the engine up to help the oil drain out and use an oil flush, I'd also change the fuel filter but it can be difficult to get the engine restarted. :)

Airconman how much are you paying for a bottle of r134a these days :?:

depemds what sort of kilo the bottle is, how come? its getting noticably more expensive recently to be honest its easily aorund £15 per kilo nowadays some places want £20 per kilo.

Where do they sell oil flush?

just found this hmmmmm

Flushing oils

These are special compound oils that are very, very thin. They almost have the consistency of tap water when cold as well as hot. Typically they are 0W/20 oils. Don't ever drive with these oils in your engine - it won't last. (Caveat : some hybrid vehicles now require 0W20, so if you're a hybrid driver, check your owner's manual). Their purpose is for cleaning out all the gunk which builds up inside an engine. Note that Mobil1 0W40 is okay, because the '40' denotes that it's actually thick enough at temperature to work. 0W20 just doesn't get that viscous!
Do I need a flushing oil?

Unless there's something seriously wrong with your engine, like you've filled it with milk or shampoo, you really ought never to need a flushing oil. If you're transitioning from a mineral oil to a synthetic oil, likewise you probably don't need to flush the engine first.
If you do decide to do an oil flush, first drain your engine of all it's oil, but leave the old oil filter in place. Next fill it up with flushing oil and run it at a fast idle for about 20 minutes. Finally, drain all this off (and marvel at the crap that comes out with it), replace the oil filter, refill with a good synthetic oil and voila! Clean engine.
Of course, like most things nowadays, there's a condition attached when using flushing oils. In an old engine you really don't want to remove all the deposits. Some of these deposits help seal rings, lifters and even some of the flanges between the heads, covers, pan and the block, where the gaskets are thin. I have heard of engines with over 280,000km that worked fine, but when flushed it failed in a month because the blow-by past the scraper ring (now really clean) contaminated the oil and screwed the rod bearings.

I've been regassing car a/c systems for about ten years now and can remember paying around £30 plus vat for the 11kg disposable bottles but last summer the price went through the roof I think I was paying about £95 plus vat for the 12kg refillable bottles from euro car parts. I havent bought any gas this year yet but as the cost of the gas goes up the amonut you can charge has come do due to people doing to cheaply.

You don't need flushing oil just a tin of oil flush fom any motor factors, it's about half a pint and just helps the old oil to drain out
