Glow/coil light flashing and cutting out

Postby Jamz_ » Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:18 pm

Right this van is starting to do my head in. Sorted other issues out (battery light) and put a new induction hose on as it ha a hole in.

Anyway, town driving in the van is fine and short fast trips are no bother. But when the father in law goes to the whole sales on the motorway (10-15miles?) the coil light comes on and flashes and then cuts the van power off completely. But as soon as he restarts the van no light and drives fine again.

I've read on here things from injectors, egr valve, throttle pedal. Any ideas?

Know a decent code reader for a laptop then as he'll never take it to main dealers.

any good garage should be able to read the codes for you at little cost.

This is a common fault on the TDCi engine. Mine does it all the time. Your codes will be p0251 and P0611 if I remember correctly. Solution is either a new HP diesel pump, approx £600-700 and/or new injectors at approx £120 EACH.
Don't bother with any 'local' garage, go straight to a diesel specialist who should know exactly the issues with a TDCi Connect, if they don't - find another one!!!

EGR and or throttle pedal faults display different fault characteristics

Well it has done 120,000 miles, with no cleaning of the EGR valve.

I have a feeling he'll live with the fault, as he doesnt have the sort of money to buy new pump and or injectors... Prob leave the van to die on the drive

Try some millers injector cleaner. Won't cure the problem, but certainly made mine better.

Same fault when driving, but consistent 30% fuel overpressure after new filter even at idle on the pluggittin. Software says P1211 (pump pressure), and P0251 (fuel metering control). Could it just be crappy diesel fouling the system?

what happened afterward?

The fault is still there but occurs less frequently. I'm out of millers at the mo and it's happening more and more, I'm leaning towards just biting the bullet and getting the injectors sorted :(
