On the outside of the roof... what you need is sikoflex marine grade (white ,, assuming your van is white ) its a million times better than any silicone for sale,,, if the outside is sealed correctly ... then you don't need to worry about the inside :D BTW sikoflex is also paintable ... silicone however isn't .

When I put the roof vent in my MK6, I measured, measured and measured again before cutting the hole.
Because the roof is ribbed, I had to build it up with Sikaflex and then "sunk" the vent into the hole.
I waited for the 1st real heavy rain and there was the tiniest leak. I got back on the roof and re-sealed it and now it is perfect.
Some folk, I believe, also use wood and other stuff to build up to the ribs, but I just used a load of sikaflex and then once the vent was sunk in, cleaned it all off to a nice neat finish.

To make up the ribs use upvc trim cut to size, sikaflex or soudal fix it all, to mount a solar panel get the mount brackets and glue with the above to the roof, you don't need to bolt or screw down, make a small wind deflector to go in front of the panel. If you ned to put screws or bolts through, use penny washers and put the above between the washers and roof on the outside and inside. Always measure twice ,cut once.
