My Mk5 Semi High Conversion

Postby suffolkboi » Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:30 pm

Well, here goes. God only knows where or if this will end. But at least i've made a start.
Meet my newley acquired 1997 LWB Semi High top, 2.5d

Good points-
Engine runs well
Its got side WIndows
Drives well
Doors, sills and archs seem to have been treated at some point, and seem ok.

Bad points- (Why is it, no matter how hard i look, these things only appear visable to me after ive handed over money?)
Slight water drip from timing belt cover
Floor has parted company with rear wheel archs
Lock are VERY dodgy i.e lock, but don't unlock

Looks quite straight on the body.door locks but wont unlock, it could have slam locks,it locks when you close it,to open it you have to keep the key turned and pull the handle.

How's the conversion going mate? Are you putting a sky light in the roof? I've just got a minibus LWB I'm converting...

Screechowl - Its getting there slowly. Now the roof is insulated and boarded, i am starting to enjoy it. (working above your head and against gravity can be infuriating!)

Ake - Good idea, although i have two keys and neither work..

Here are a few update pics. The roof is insulated with foiled bubble wrap from Homebase and the walls with 25mm Celotex. I used Sikaflex to stick the boards up. (duck tape in the pictures is temporary)
I really recommend Celotex, at least in terms of working with it. Easy to cut and very satisfying to wedge into cavities in the wall. Lets hope it insulates well..

Since these photos i have boarded up the drivers side wall, now just waiting on getting my floor welded up.

Nope. Im trying to keep this nice and simple. I have a sliding side window, and i will fit extractor or vent on the rear doors. Hopefully that should suffice.

I'd have to have about ten extracter fans. My vehicles always get so steamed up. I think its because of my dogs in the back. One is such a big sod...like a grizzly bear. I might use him to power a steam room business    ....I think I'll have to get a skylight in mine or swap for a hi top :?

Have your previous vehicles been well insulated? And still steamed up?

Why not let Fido sleep outside - 24hr security then!

If I stay at camps the pack do sleep outside in an enclosure, but I only need to leave em in for 5mins while I nip to shops & its all steamed up when I get back; the steam then condenses & drips down to start rotting the floor over the years :(

My last one was/is a hi top with a skylight & insulated too.....oh, those were the days  I used to have the skylight open nearly all the time & it never got steamed up  Its lovely going to sleep looking up at the stars & getting natural, direct oxygen all night while u sleep & ozone after a thunder storm is absolutely exhilerating & you wake up so sparkly fresh 8) 8) 8)

I'm wondering if I could put my hi top on my new one... I'm told it can be done but so much involved it wouldn't be worth it? Or maybe put a little sunroof in the flat section at the end of the roof. I dont fancy patching up the ridges to fit a skylight as I know so many people who've caused irritating leaks by doing things like that... :(
