Mk7 conversion

Postby mtbmatt » Fri Mar 23, 2012 11:25 am

Here is my new van which I will be converting to a camper. It is a 2008 Transit 350 GLX, 140ps engine.
It will be a MTB race van, so will have a garage at the rear to store 2/3 bikes and also some related kit that I don't want in the living area.
I'm taking some inspiration from AK's Ex Network rail conversion, but will be doing things from scratch.

Not sure of the final layout yet, but it will be a 4 berth but no shower area. It's booked in for side windows and will have an awning and roof vent fitted soon, after that I can get cracking on the inside.

I need it 100% finished by July, but hoping to have it ready to use by May depending on time and money.

Progress update.
Not quite as far along as I had hoped, but getting there...

So I removed all the old ply, filled in the millions of holes in the floor - discovered that the previous owner had screwed through the fuel tank - DOH!
Had to drop the tank and put another screw in to plug the hole.
Image

Then re-layed new ply using 2x1 battens, 25mm cellotex type insulation board and 12mm ply.
Image

Image

Then I took a trip to Autoglaze in Gloucester to get bonded privacy windows fitted. I also fitted the 240v external power point.
Image

Got cracking inside on the insulation. 2x1 battens stuck on with sikaflex. Combination of cellotex boards, 100mm lower down and 50mm elsewhere. I've filled the gaps with B2 fire grade expanding foam. Also bubble foil insulation in where I don't have space for insulation boards and tricky areas. Electric cables were pushed through conduit, should I need to add any other cables.
Image

Image

I've also had a Fiamma ZIP awning fitted, I have a Heki midi waiting to fit. Some of the wall panels have been made, just need to carpet them and fit them.

In the process of building the bed box, then all the electrics can go in. Getting the van measured for the rear garage section which is being built in 1" box steel.
Taking longer than I hoped, but still should have it finished.

very nice work mate!

I would love to have the money and time to do this, and looking at other progress reports makes me really want to..

Do you mind me asking what your budget is, and what youve spent so far?

Big Update!

Decided to fit the roof window myself... gulp!

Fitted a whale water point on the recommendation of those on here
Image

I had to improvise to fit the roof support sections!
Image

New bulkhead fitted
Image

Bedbase, electrics and starting the walls
Image

I had a local fabricator weld a steel box section frame to support a bed above the rear garage.
Image

Starting to take shape and see the space available.
Image

Bed base finished, although I will re-do one section when I return from Europe. I had to rush it a bit and it isn't quite what I want.

Foam from Ace Foam.

Started the ceiling
Image

Awning and Antenna fitted

My wife made the foam covers. Also made a nicer leg section for the bed and a carpet section to hide the inside.

Smev 8123. Not an easy hob to fit!
Image

Basic table

Almost to a point where I can leave and be happy with it, although lots more work until it is 100% finished.
