Postby Davesbackbone » Sun Mar 10, 2013 7:09 pm

so here it goes, finaly got a van and seems to be a half decent one fingers crossed, so its a y reg and was bought from newcastle area, initial lay out was £1099, has 130 000 miles on the clock but drives realy well, im a bit of a motorsports fanatic and always have been so this van is going to be for my racing mainly so am excited of how it will turn out, below is a couple of pics of my toys, rally car has gone and im currently racing the kart

Since buying the van i have scrubed the front as it was a builders van as per so was stinking, i removed the seats, roof lining and floor mat to clean and jet wash, i had to hammer the dash with flash dash as the dash went a little white afrer being scrubbed, i have fitted a new bluetooth, usb stereo, led lights wired to the interior light so light up both footwells and left wires for more to be fitted in the rear, i bought and fitted new gen ford mats so the cab is now a nice place to be.

Since this ive insulated the floor using thermal foil and cheap laminate underlay and test fitted a couple of lengths of laminate before starting the cuts, more updates as and when

Looks great! and a good base vehicle. Although you have cleaned it and scrubbed it, but are the mechanics of it ok? serviced regularly? or are you servicing it?
Being a racing fanatic, I'll presume though the mechanics are already sorted!
So it's just down to the fitting out to relax in, after a days racing? :D

I ran a CRG dark knight for 6 meetings before swapping back to an old tony EVXX. I just couldn't get on with the CRG and was 4 tenths quicker in the older kart.

Sadly I've given up on karting for a little while now. I have two very good senior max motors for sale if you're interested :)

I couldn't get my CRG to release properly, even though it had loads of side bite. And those brakes - well, if you're used to the OTK system, the brakes are rediculous.

I have the following:
Redspeed / OTK evxx, 2008, about a seasons' use - 300 quid.
2010 barelled revolution racing prepared senior rotax with exhaust, PV, good carb, mount (for otk - you'd have to get a different one for your CRG) - 12 hours since last full rebuild, sealed with logbook - 1200.
2009 ogden fiched, with PV - described by mr ogden as 'a good super 1 motor', third most powerful motor seen on revolution racings' dyno. 10 hours since ogden rebuild, sealed with logbook - 1200.

Like the carbon wrap! nice touch.

regarding the conversion, don't do what I did with my sprinter and make the van too 'dedicated' to carrying the kart.

If I was to do it all again, I'd re-arrange the cabin so that there were 2 190cm long (that's the length you need for the kart with the nosecone off) opposing benches for seating and storage to the rear, running length ways, with a table in between which would sit on runners to form a bed platform, but you could transport the kart on that platform too, and store it outside / under an awning at race meets.

Tools and crap can go under the kart when it's on the platform, or in the storage benches. you could put a fresh water tank in the benches too.

In the sprinter I had it set up with a two kart stacked garage underneath the bed, which squeezed the living area and made it all way too cramped. Having a toilet & shower cubicle opposite the kitchen pod didn't help. It was very convenient to have an enclosed space for storage, but sleeping on the bunk was a bit claustrophobic, and weekends away with the missus & the dog (now we have 2 dogs) were a bit cramped. With my transit, even though it's not as tall or as long inside, it's much more open and far more comfortable.

Here's my old van, now sold, to give you some ideas:

That is awesome mate, so you built it all yourself? I will be picking your brains alot if thats ok, basicaly i want a fixed bed and garage underneath, this is my first one so is going to be very basic, i want it set out like your sprinter but as my vans not as long where you had the bathroom mine will be a very narrow wardrobe then the bed will start, what was the measurment between the roof and the top of your matress just for an idea? Again i think your van is cock on set out like that, my little girl loves the idea of a bed she can climb into aswell so thats another reason why the bed wil be like your sprinter haha, thanks for the advice, anything else i shud be carefull of???

I paid a local 'specialist' to to it, but it was to my specification.

The guy was a complete and utter twat, to be honest, it took way to long to finish and there were plenty of major issues with the build that could have killed myself and my girlfriend either through electrocution or carbon monoxide poisoning. The conversion cost me 8k & I had to spend a further 2k getting it checked & sorted by professional caravan engineers who actually knew what they were doing, to gas and electrical certification standards.

Thankfully the ***t is now out of business, and the van was sold 5 weeks ago. I don't really miss it, It felt like it was cursed to me!

I think the sleeping area to the roof was about 70cm, which wasn't enough really. I specified the height based on the prospect of carrying 2 karts (if my mate wanted to come racing too). We never really felt comfortable sleeping in such a narrow slot.

I was a bit of a snob and loved the idea of having a toilet & shower on board. But the footprint of the shower tray took up a lot of space. In the new van we have a solar shower (if we're not staying at a site with facilities) and a porta potti

This is the layout I'd copy if I was to do it all over again:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-LT35-Campe ... 4171787162

if I take up karting again in my own kart (tempted by TKM clubman) I'd just get a trailer!

Bot of a bummer he was a tw@t eh, ya pay your hard earned and in return you get junk, that does'nt exclude high street and large comercial companies either, i had that with a rollcage i had made to fit my bmw compact from scratch, the guy advertised in Motorsport news so was certain i was onto a winner, far from it as dodgy as they come, anyway im only carrying one kart always and if need be will get a small trailer for an extra kart if that ever comes, well i like the layout of your old sprinter so will probs continue with that, defo gunna think long and hard about head room when on the bunk, its all still ideas floating at the mo but am very greatful for your advice, TKM clubman, mmm, grids any good where you are, ive just moved to rotax for this season due to absolute embaressing tkm grids at Warden Law, November last year i raced myself haha, shocking

I think it's a class that's about to sprout, as it's unbelievably cheap. New tyres are banned, older chassis only, 30mm axle, no data logging, fixed gearing.

I'm also doing a few rounds of the EKL this year (a national team based series for pro karts) where you turn up, pay 100 quid and get probably twice as much track time as you would at an average MSA meet. and the racing is incredible (once you get over the shocking driving standards some racers dish out).

Will you be in teesside doing that EKL then, thats my local track
