My MK7 SWB 115 trend conversion (Picture heavy)

Postby GnarlyDon » Sun Jun 05, 2016 7:03 pm

Hey all thanks for taking the time to look at my conversion project. Ive waited until i got the van to a stage that im happy to go sleep in it until starting a thread. I have seen so many threads that start off strong and then never get updated. Its taken me around 7 weeks of evenings and weekends to get it done so far. The end product will be a van i can chuck my tools in for work so theyre are out the way and so that me, the missus and the hound can go away for a night or 2. We live in cornwall and its summer, would be rude not to. I have started in the back and the plan is to finish the back completely then move onto the front cab where the bench seat will come out with a single seat in its place with a swivel so we can walk from front to back and a few other bits then the body and engine which are pretty sound anyway but i plan on having the van for some time so why not make it pretty. So far Ive insulated, plyed, built up a floor also insulated, ran cables for 6x9s in the rear, installed a leisure battery with a split charge relay and also a dead switch so i still have control, 2 lighting rings for the main spotlights in the ceiling and another to light the 2 boxes, and built the boxes for the storage/bed and one for my board and all the electrics (Inverter, sub, amp etc) also installed a 500w inveter. And thats pretty much where im at with it as of now. Next will be installing sub, amo and 6x9s, a nice double 13amp socket with usb ports just for a laptop and phones, and then carpeted and that should be it for the back. Anyway onto the pics. Theres a lot.

So this was the van when i brought it.

So i started by removing the bulk head and giving the van a decent clean down. Then i started sticking double bubble to all the external panels and stick the edges with foil tape. Then filled all the doors and the bottom half of the walls with 50mm celotex and cotton bud like insulation used to pump into wall cavities in buildings which has made the doors feel a lot more sturdy. Then i ran the ring for the 12v led spots for the ceiling.

Then i filled all the holes in the floor and wheel arches and treated them. Whatever donut plyed the van had drilled straight through the arches and floor.

I also re positioned the interior rear lights from the center of the van to one above the sliding door and another central at the rear of the van and changed all the interior lights so theyre LED. Looks so much better than the nasty halogen bulbs.

Next was to start the actual building. I started withe the floor then the walls and doors then the ceiling . Finishing off today with the building of the boxes. Ive also intalled a leisure battery with split charge relay although i didnt take any pics of it.

There will be more to come in the following weeks/months so stay tuned. Any input is always welcome. Id like to give a big thanks to Paul, Ads and Kev for helping me out along the way even though they will probably never see this haha. Cheers for having a look guys and girls.

Cheers man. It handles a lot better with the weight. I got it remapped to 170bhp a month ago. It still pulls really well.

Do your back doors not leak with the ply being right at the edge of the door?

Have you had it weighed since you converted it? All that 3x2 and plywood soon adds up

I've not had it weighed but I'm thinking about stopping the box sections down and just using 38x50 battan to frame it all. I think it will make a big difference. I've only used thick ply for the bed apart from that it's pretty thin everywhere else.
