Is my Camper Van worth saving ?

Postby OuterMongolia » Wed Dec 07, 2016 1:20 am

I have a high roof 2.5 Diesel. 1999 . With a lot of problems . Firstly a leak in the right hand side top windscreen corner has caused a lot of problems .Namely to start with ,serve corrosion if that corner of the windscreen itself . Presumably with a previous owner not bothering to sort the problem out properly ,the continuation of the water leaking into the vehicle has caused severe corrosion around around the door area and floor on the drivers side . The corrosion around the door area on the main body of the van was in fact so bad the door had to be replaced with a different model so a new bracket could be made . This should have set alarm bells ringing when I noticed the door was different but no I thought it has a nice interior 10 months on the MOT and impatient for a high roofed van so I handed over £2,500 ! What`s happened now is because the leaking corner of the windscreen had an attempt to fix it with resin which has gone very hard this had most probably caused the windscreen to crack. I came out after one recent very cold night and found a long crack from top to bottom on the Drivers side . I can only assume that because the resin held the glass so firmly in place that when it contracted due to the low temperature the night before ,it couldn`t contract enough and this caused the crack .Other problems .Suspension not good ,most probably worn .Windscreen wash not working .Brake pads worn .No heater fan .Brake light out . Is it worth getting through at MOT ?.How much is a new windscreen ? Would require welding around the door area and top corner of windscreen .Engine pretty sound 91 ,000 alleged miles !

Jeez that`a fair point ! But I have checked the washer fluid and can hear the pump working ! No spray coming out the nozzles !it won`t cost that much to do the rear light as I already have the bulb ! Bit is it worth the effort of doing up ?

True that Punto , sometimes its better the devil you know.
Though iv'e just got a replacement van as my tourneo has a rotten arse end.
Coupled with previous repairs its a bit like a patchwork quilt.
if it doesnt cost the earth, get it fixed.

Might be a stupid question, but have you checked the nozzles aren't blocked or if the washer hose hasn't split somewhere?

no

The inlet to the pump can fill up with gunk, pull the pump out the bottle and clean it.

If I was you I'd put it for an mot and find out how bad it really is before spending any big money.

Do you like the van? If so, I would find out how much the repairs will cost. Would it be cheaper than getting another van with it's potential problems?

The windscreen crack is probably due to rust. As metal rusts it expands and puts a lot of pressure on the glass. This happened on my old tranny. Not a bit deal though. When they came to replace the windscreen, when the old screen was off, I scraped away the loose rust to remove the pressure, and put a load of rust converter on the rusty metalwork.
