Fitted some side setp bars today!

Postby Beaker » Sat Jan 14, 2017 5:18 pm

Braved the freezing rain to fit these. Fortunately only took 40 minutes to fit.

Cheers!

My knees are knackered, and my wife is only 5 foot one, so these help a lot getting in the side!

I like those, I was thinking about some sort of pull out step, if I can get one, mainly as a 'doorstep/doormat' to keep as much mud and cack out of the van but they look good.

Here's the link for the ones I bought - they arrived next day. Instruction leaflet is very poor, but they are an easy fit, honest!

Looks good
but how much room is there for your feet, doesnt look very wide
or do they slide out on opening the door?

You are right, there's not a lot of room for your feet, and no, they don't slide out - they are completely fixed. The foot plate is very grippy, even when wet and if you put you foot lengthways along the footplate (rather than just your toes at right angle to them), they are rock solid stable and make a big difference when getting in or out.

The only downside is they are pretty easy to nick - undo three nuts underneath and they are off. Once I had them fitted and I was happy with the positioning, I undid the nuts one at a time and threadlocked them!

Easy - just put a drop of threadlock onto the bolts before you tighten them up. Will stop them coming loose and make it difficult to deliberately undo them.

Sent from my SM-T585 using Tapatalk[/quote]Do you think side steps are better than just side bars as I like the bars that trade van accessories sell as they don't seem to overdo it

I got my bars from Trade Van Accessories too and they were great to deal with - and they are on sale at the moment so considerably cheaper. Which bars are you looking at?

I have the B2 bars on my van. The B1 and B2 are the same bars, but the B1 are plain chrome tubes while the B2 have the plastic tread plates on them. I would recommend having the plates for safety reasons - far better grip than chrome steel.

The C2 bars look the best, but are not really wide enough to use as a safe step - as they point out on the listing.

The other alternative is Thule or similar Taxi style fold out manual or electric steps. They need electrics and need to drilled and fitted. They are probably safer and more comfortable to use, but they seemed to much trouble to me when the Trade Van Accessories bars don't need drilling and are really simple to fit.
