Ex RAC Camper Conversion

Postby teamdave » Mon Jan 16, 2017 9:50 am

Hi all, my first time posting on the site.

I've just started my first ever van conversion and thought id start a thread and share my progress and hopefully pick some brains for tips and help.

My van is an Ex RAC 2007 MK7. Brought her at the end of the summer and have started working on her in the last few weeks.
Paid £2200 with 162k on the clock.
Runs well with only problem I've found so far is the reverse lights not working and the standard Transit rust.

So here goes :D

Lovely stuff! I just bought an 08, ex BT van with 140k on the clock and intend to do almost exactly the same thing as you.
I'll be watching this thread with interest!

Few pics in the state I got her, some racking, hard board lining and the old hand washer inside.

Outside, few rust patches

First up I ripped out all the racking, old floor, removed the bulk head and cut back / removed any old RAC wiring that I could.
Ive been told not to mess too much with the old RAC wires. I just cut them back and chocolate blocked them.

There were a few holes in the floor were old equipment was bolted in so i blocked them off with some plastic caps and contact adhesive.

For the floor I've gone with 25mm Celotex stuck down with contact adhesive. Covered with plastic sheet to act as a waterproof / vapor barrier and then 10mm ply on top.

Next up its insulation time.
I've lined the van with the foil bubble wrap, not the fancy stuff, the cheapo stuff from wickes.

Next i filled the cavity with The recycled plastic insulation from BnQ

I've then sealed it all in with the foil buble wrap as a vapor barrier

Nice!

That's my next job, to insulate.

I had to contend with this racking though -

Time to board her out!!

Im using 10mm ply as i want to to be solid all over so I can put shelves / hooks in.

I've installed a low profile wind operated airvent and some ply supports to attach the final bit of roof ply.
Painted around all the screws on top to stop any rust / leaks
