Roof Top storage options

Postby paulrichardson » Tue Feb 21, 2017 6:51 pm

Hi guys,

I really need more storage room for my SWB Transit and the only space I have left is the roof.

Image

The recessed space you can see in the photo (sorry it's so big) measures 95cm wide by 70cm long. I've tried to find a Topbox to fit there, but they are all too big (I've got a big Topbox for sale but that's another story).

I wondered if anyone had any brilliant ideas of how I could utilise this space on my roof, ideally something waterproof.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Paul

I managed to find a pretty low level top box for ours as I didn't want anything that stuck up like a double decker lol

I've looked at loads of different ones, but can't find anything that will fit on my roof.

Fantastic photo by the way.

Regards,

Paul.

Hi Guys,

Not sure why but the photo of my roof has disappeared from my post.

I'll try again.

Any ideas what might fit on here?

Hi Guys,

My search for a top box failed, so I decided to make my own, to fit the flat space on the roof.

I used the same principles as the cupboards inside the van, a framework covered with plywood, but this time I used tanalised timber for the framework and marine ply for the outside.

Glued and screwed together, then primed, undercoated and sprayed with Hammerite Silver (almost the same colour as the van).

I popped it on the roof to see what it looked like:-

I had the idea that a cover as used on a trailer would be the option, so I got one made to measure off ebay.:-

Finally I fitted the cover properly, stuck the box on the roof with Sikaflex 512 and as you can see from the "bumps" I filled it with stuff:-

It doesn't look too obtrusive from the ground, and I can fit loads of (light) stuff in it.

Storage problem solved (for now).

Paul
