Advice on adding a 12v system to my current 240v system ?

Postby tmm » Sun May 14, 2017 3:40 pm

HI
I currently only have a 240v electric system in my van conversion( big mistake i have made with the conversion :( ) I like to add a 12v system linked into the 240v setup how difficult would this be without wrecking my van and what else would i need to do it please? Or would it be easier buying a little generator?
cheers

Yeah so really everything should have been 12v to start with and then a 240v to 12vdc transformer used to charge leisure batteries when mains available.
Basically you be best to add additional 12v lighting etc on seperate circuits and power em from battery which in turn gets mains charger or such to top up batteries when mains available

Mind some places/sites won't let you use generator after certain time due to noise

People who runs generators are not the most loved ones on camper places
Why don't you start telling us for what purpose you want the 12volt?
Is it just for a light? ... do you need more power? TV, satelite dish, computer radio?
How much AH would you use daily?
I always would recommend the use of a leisure battery. 8)
I would also recommend to have all connections made, calculations done, fuses installed, by someone who knows what he is doing.

HI Cheers for the reply.
It mainly to add another option which i really should have done before i put it all together  . ITs a mainly for another option. It will run a small tv, charge phone and a 4 meters of these DC12V Waterproof Flexible LED lights
Would a battery and a split charger be ok to run these?

If your TV is low input wattage, and you only use it for a couple of hours, then that should be fine.

If in doubt just calculate your maximum amp/hour figure and see how long your battery is likely to last.

I have just started converting my second van, So this time Robbie.cc i'm going to add a split charger, 12v sockets, 12v led lights and a 12v water pump, the only 240v i will have will be via a hook up point which will then be linked to a transformer to charge the battery. Does that seems about right? Do you know which transformer is the best for doing the charging of the battery?
