Does a small 240v fridge need ventilation?

Postby tmm » Mon May 29, 2017 2:23 pm

Hi
Been doing a little reading on the internet and its got my head confused a bit. Most say you don't need outside ventilation with a 240v(only 240v) fridge and other say you do. I have it in a unit which has a door to conceal it like in the photo attached.

If it runs on 240 or 12 Volt electric it does not need outside ventilation - it just needs air circulating around the heat exchanger in order to dissipate the heat produced (or else your fridge won't last very long).
It will heat your van up though, which is why some folks seal the back of the fridge enclosure, and punch a vent hole through to the outside.

If It's gas powered or a triple source fridge (220V/12V/gas), it will need venting to the outside.

From your photo, you should be fine as it is, as your surround looks quite generously sized.

The more air you have arround it the more efficient it will work, in the past have fitted a computer fan behind with thermo switch attacheb pre set to certain temp so like on a hot day the fan will kick in a move air say from a cupboard next to or from vent located at floor level, as been in a cupboard it can get warm so you just circulating the same air round.
It's a personl choice but I hate warm beer...lol

I've got a Waeco CRX110 fridge
I also used a Computer fan to help keep air circulating.
The fridge definitely works better with it.

Hey 4x4 Tranny,
can you tell me or give me a link to the thermal switch you are using.
At the moment I turn it on and off manually.
Auto switching would help regulate the fan when I'm not in the van

Cheers
