Mk6 rwd high roof project van pros and cons

Postby tpmp » Sat Apr 07, 2018 4:54 pm

I am currently at the very start of my campervan conversion project.
My project van is a 2002 rwd high roof van (purely because I already have it)
While going through possible layouts and build ideas it got me thinking about the suitability of different vans for conversion and thought I would ask what everyone's thoughts are on the advantages and disadvantages of the mk6 rwd h/r in relation to conversion.

To be fair, I have no experience of converting any other van so like you this is a new beginning. I also have a 2002 mwb rwd transit but have a med roof. The reason I chose what I did was down to a few factors. I love the ride of the transit, it is so comfortable over most other vans, there are a million and one of them about so spares are cheap, lots of knowledge about. my friend had a Renault traffic and she was on first name terms with green flag. Rust free they are amazing tanks, engines if looked after are bullet proof (mine has 300k on the clock) so far I have fitted leisure battery and heater with a window to go in when it finally stops raining. floor is down and one half insulated. I prefer the driving experience over my daily driver and the dogs love it as they can see more lol.

I did a DIY conversion on a Mk6 high roof (MWB). I had it for 15 years and the layout really worked for us. But then it's horses for courses with camper vans. Anyway, here are a few pics in case it helps...

Looks very nice hectors-tranny.

Some things I have noticed

The floor in the rwd is higher which reduces the headroom in the van compared to the fwd.
That said I have 6ft inside which is grand.

Severe corrosion on the mk6 seems to be far too common

Parts and information is easily available
