Bunks mounted to wall or roof ribs

Postby maushawk » Tue May 22, 2018 5:20 pm

I had an idea for a submarine style overhead bunk that could either fold out from the wall or lower down from the ceiling (see pic). I'm not a big guy, 5'6" & 11 stone. Would a bed bolted directly to the steel ribs (if hinged at the wall, then braced with a chain from the outside edge) be strong enough? Or should anything weight-bearing either transfer all weight to the floor or fully span from wall to wall?

At a guess - yes. Provided all anchorages were to ribs and nothing to the van skin itself. Distance from hinges to stays is also important - bigger the triangle - less force through the stays. My opinion based on the fact that you can walk on the roof of a Transit.
